At around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, the 16 of June 2025, an alleged Israeli drone strike hit two trailers travelling on the Tehran-Qom highway en route to Khorramabad. The strike devastated a car belonging to the Gholami family, travelling nearby, killing a girl, a prominent Iranian athlete, and injuring her family members – her father, mother and siblings.

Helena Gholami, a 12-year-old girl from Lorestan, and her family members, including her parents and siblings, were travelling in one of the vehicles from Tehran to Khorramabad. Helena was taken to Tehran’s 7th Tir Hospital and died five days later, on June 21, having fallen into a coma.

According to Haft Sobh, the injured family members were immediately taken to Tehran’s Haftom Tir Hospital where Helena’s father and siblings were treated. Her mother, who was more seriously injured, was still hospitalised at the moment of reporting by this news outlet.

Helena was a prominent athlete, a champion of the Kyokushin Karate Asia, and a member of the Iranian women’s national karate team. Reporting about her death, @TehranTimes79 posted an image of a young girl dressed in a white karate uniform with a yellow belt, wearing a medal around their neck on a black-and-gold ribbon. She is seen holding a gold-coloured trophy, shaped like a small figure on top of a pedestal, in one hand, and a certificate of championship in the other hand, where it is written “First Asian Tournament of Kyokushin Karate.”

Her mother remembered her daughter in an interview with Fars News Agency, Lorestan: “My beautiful Rolle… My kind Rolle…Helena was the flower of our home. Kind, sweet, and full of life. With every tear she shed, I cried too, and in my heart I said: May God destroy the cause and author of the shedding of innocent blood.” The mother also added that her daughter always wanted to win: “She wanted to be the best. Since childhood, she had built her life with sports and with love; she won medals one after another. Now, with her martyrdom, she came first.”

Helena’s mother also recalled the details of the incident that took the life of her daughter: “That day, they were returning to Khorramabad, at around 11:30 p.m. A terrible explosion occurred. Helena was injured, and part of her face was burned. She was taken to Haft-Tir Hospital in Rey and was in a coma for three days.” The mother added that Helena had just turned twelve on June 10th.

Helena’s coach, Rezvan Beiranvand, also emphasised Helena’s ambitions and achievements: “She started Kyokushin at the age of six. She was disciplined, moral, hardworking and kind. She always attended training and rarely missed classes. She had many positions in provincial, national and Asian competitions and was often the first. Her most important medal is the Asian medal, which she won by defeating four strong opponents.”

Mr. Farashi, a close relative of the family, said in an interview with the “Haft Sobh” reporter: “Helena was an angel. She always had a smile on her face. Even in the most difficult training sessions, she did not despair. She was a sweet-spoken, lovely and very intelligent girl. Even now, when I am talking about her, I cannot believe that she is no longer with us when I remember the lovely little girl of the family.

Gholamreza Ghandipour, head of the Lorestan Karate Federation, also mourned the death of Helena “The loss of this 11-year-old athlete is a great loss not only for the Lorestan sports community, but also for the entire country. Talents like Helena are rare. We have lost not only a champion, but also a bright future.”

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.

Helena Gholami, the 12-year-old girl and champion of the Kyokushin Karate Asia , who had once walked to Karbala, wished to visit the shrine of Abu Abdullah al-Hussein again. But the Israeli regime’s missile attack on the Tehran-Qom highway took away this opportunity and took her life. In the alley where the walls now display Helena’s image, a banner of her is installed; a girl who was martyred less than ten days ago. Seeing this banner broke my heart. Although I had arranged to interview her mother myself, I was afraid to face her. A mother whose child had been taken from her by the infanticidal Israeli regime. When I entered the house, the heavy atmosphere of Muharram was wafting in every corner. The mourning flags of Imam Hussein (AS) filled the place. Her mother said with resentment: “I cover the house in black every year for the two months of Muharram and Safar. This year, I added two more pieces of cloth on behalf of Helena. Helena loved Muharram. Every night, she played drums in the assembly and wore black for the first ten days of Muharram. When we had a prayer meeting, she enthusiastically invited the women of the neighborhood and was active in distributing offerings. This year, however, only her place was left empty. During the interview, several people came to offer their condolences. Helena's mother said in a Leki language with a moan and groan: "My beautiful Rolle... My kind Rolle." A voice came from the depths of her soul. An unbearable resentment. She said: Helena was the flower of our home. Kind, sweet, and full of life. With every tear she shed, I cried too, and in my heart I said: May God destroy the cause and author of the shedding of innocent blood. The mother continued: Helena always said that I had to be first. She wanted to be the best. Since childhood, she had built her life with sports and with love, she won medals one after another. Now, with her martyrdom, she came first. She remembered the day of the incident with bitter calm. That day, they were returning to Khorramabad, at around 11:30 p.m. A terrible explosion occurred. Helena was injured and part of her face was burned. She was taken to Haft-Tir Hospital in Rey and was in a coma for three days. The mother said: I couldn’t believe she was martyred. Helena had just turned twelve. Her birthday was on June 10. Now I have to mourn for her. May God not forgive this criminal, child-killing regime. She said: Two years ago, we walked to Karbala together. It was Arbaeen. I told her that the path was difficult, but she never once said that she was tired or thirsty. She wanted to go again, a wish that remained in her heart. Now I am left with memories that kill me every moment. Hearing the women’s cries, the mother became impatient. She said in a slurred voice: My daughter, I miss you. It wasn’t time for you to leave yet. She said: Helena always wanted to be famous, and now she has become proud with her martyrdom. When she went to competitions, she would say, "Pray that I come first." Now, with her martyrdom, she has become immortal. The mother said, "Maybe if she had not been a martyr, it would have been harder for me to bear her departure." But when I think of her words, when she said she wanted to be proud, I calm myself down. She is now in a place that is definitely easier than our world full of oppression. The martyrdom of Helena and other children is evidence of the crimes of the infanticidal regime that has martyred thousands of children in Gaza. A regime that claims to attack military facilities but does not spare women and children. Statement from Helena's mother "My Helena was neither a soldier nor a nuclear scientist. She was a teenager who had many dreams and wanted to shine in the field of sports. I want my voice to reach the so-called human rights organizations and say for what sin my daughter was martyred." Her coach, Rezvan Beiranvand, said: Helena started Kyokushin at the age of six. She was disciplined, moral, hardworking and kind. She always attended training and rarely missed classes. She had many positions in provincial, national and Asian competitions and was often the first. Her most important medal is the Asian medal, which she won by defeating four strong opponents. “My sweet roll… My beautiful roll…” And the hatred that has penetrated to the depths of my mother’s soul is with me all night.

TEHRAN- Helena was just 12 years old — an Asian karate champion whose name now carries the sacred title of “Martyr.” In a place where medals are no longer given to athletes but dedicated to martyrs, her story resonates deeply. In the small village of Sarnamak, near Biran Shahr in Lorestan Province, a profound and emotional ceremony was held. It was a farewell to a young girl who, with small hands but a great heart, brought honor to the sports arena and sacrificed her life on the battlefield of courage and innocence for her homeland. Helena Gholami, Asia’s Kyokushin karate champion, has now become immortalized as “Martyr Helena Gholami” in the memory of the Iranian people — a girl who left with a smile and returned bearing a sacred title amid the crime of the child-killing Zionist regime. A small village, big hearts, and a deep sorrow On a sorrowful yet unforgettable morning, a gentle breeze swept through the alleys of Sarnamak. Yet the hearts of the villagers were heavy with profound grief—grief mingled with pride, dignity, and honor, turning the village into a symbol of unity, solidarity, and resistance. A grand and indescribable ceremony was held to honor the young martyr Helena Gholami. After years of dedication in sports and international achievements, she was brutally martyred in the Zionist regime’s heinous attack. The event attracted a large crowd of citizens, officials, and athletes. From dawn, the village was filled with chants of mourning, blessings, and recitations of the Quran, enveloping the atmosphere with spirituality. The mournful cries and chants blended with hearts aching from Helena’s absence, echoing the famous refrain: “Red rose of Baharani, Hossein, oh Hossein”—a voice filled with sorrow, symbolizing how Helena, the red rose of her family, had blossomed only to fall in early adolescence. A mother’s silent grief Inside a humble home, Helena’s mother clutched her daughter’s photo close to her heart in a silence full of pain. Her face reflected the waves of separation’s sorrow but her eyes shone with faith and steadfastness. Softly, she spoke to her daughter’s picture: “My dear Helena, I know you are in a good place…” She continued, “I am truly proud that my daughter became a martyr. The word ‘martyr’ before Helena’s name brings me peace. She sacrificed her life for the revolution, the homeland, and our dear leader. My children, my life, everything I have, I dedicate to the Leader.” A father’s unbowed spirit Helena’s father, a devout and resilient man, stood beside the mother. Tears welled in his eyes, but his voice was firm and filled with pride: “I proudly offered my child to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Helena was more than a champion athlete; she was martyred by the child-killing Zionist regime. I thank God for this precious gift to our nation and people.” A medal that shines on a mother’s chest A historic and unforgettable moment touched everyone present. Ghazal Fathi, Asia’s karate champion and Helena’s teammate, with tear-filled eyes, handed over her own gold medal — once won in Asian competitions — with trembling yet heartfelt hands to Helena’s mother. That medal now represents not just sports achievements but a symbol of solidarity, sacrifice, and honoring the pure blood of the martyr. A medal for the motherland… worn on the chest of a grieving yet proud mother. Ghazal Fathi, her voice choked with emotion, said: “I am only a small part of the sports community, but I felt it was my duty to offer this medal to the pure soul of Martyr Helena Gholami. This medal no longer belongs to me; it belongs to the nation that defines courage and sacrifice through the blood of its daughters.” Lorestan governor: Helena, a symbol of oppression and strength Seyed Saeed Shahrokhi, Governor of Lorestan, expressed deep sorrow over the brutal Zionist crime and the martyrdom of the young Iranian girl. He stated, “Dear Helena is a symbol of our nation’s oppression and strength. Her martyrdom at age 12 is living testimony to the inhumane and unforgivable crimes of the child-killing Zionist regime. Helena was not only a karate champion but came from a family devoted to the values of the revolution and leadership. She sacrificed her precious life for her homeland and people.” He continued, “The Gholami family symbolizes resilience and faith. This martyrdom is a source of pride for this land. I pray to God to grant patience, reward, and health to this family.” The governor, who visited Sarnamak and met the martyr’s family, emphasized the importance of keeping Helena’s name alive: “I extend my condolences and respect to the noble and resilient family of Martyr Gholami. Our presence here is a tribute to the lofty status of martyrs. May God grant honor, dignity, and health to all people, especially the families of martyrs.” A child departed, but a martyr returned According to reports, the ceremony concluded amidst tears and prayers, but Helena’s voice remains alive. The little Helena was martyred, but her voice became a banner, a cry, and the blood in the veins of this proud land. Sarnamak, once Helena’s training ground, has now become a gathering place to renew vows with martyrs who defend the homeland not only with weapons but with faith and honor. The end of this farewell was not a sunset but a new dawn—a dawn of faith, steadfastness, and pride. Today, Sarnamak is more than ever a symbol of both oppression and honor—a place where a child left, but a martyr returned. Martyr Helena Gholami, your name will remain eternal in the history of this land. (Source: Mehr News Agency)

On the morning of Saturday, May 31, when Helena Gholami's frail body could no longer bear the weight of her 5-day struggle with death, a bitter and gray morning began in Khorramabad. Helena was martyred and her hometown is now mourning a girl who created pride with her small hands and dreamed big dreams with her big heart. Helena Gholami, an 11-year-old girl and a miniature hero who passed away in silence and disbelief, and her empty place in the hearts of her family, friends, coaches and the people of the city will remain forever. Helena's Flight Helena was not just a child. She was the image of hope. A symbol of the effort and determination of the new generation of girls in this land. Since childhood, she looked at the world with curious and enthusiastic eyes. She was not even five years old when she saw a friend practicing sports, a spark of interest shone in her eyes. Contrary to the expectations of her family, who until that day were strangers to the world of martial arts, Helena chose her path boldly. Her coach always said: "Helena learned the technique with just one look. Her talent was innate, but what set her apart was her perseverance and love for the sport." In a short time, the colorful medals she had won from various competitions, domestic and even international, decorated the walls of her room. She competed in freestyle karate with adult competitors and never failed. The coaches told her of a bright future. But fate, more bitter than anything imaginable, cut the thread of this brave girl's life. Drone hit On Monday, the Gholami family was returning from a family trip from Tehran to Khorramabad. The trip, which was intended to rest and visit loved ones, ended in a horrific accident. Near one of the transportation axes between the provinces, two trailers were targeted by Israeli missile-launching drones. The Gholami family's car was nearby and the blast shook them violently. The car was seriously damaged and the family members were injured. They were immediately taken to Tehran's Haftom Tir Hospital. Helena's father and siblings were treated. Her mother, who was more seriously injured, is still hospitalized. But what broke everyone's hearts was the news of little Helena's martyrdom. She passed away the next morning, before sunrise, while people were still sleeping. Funeral of the little martyr On Sunday morning, Helena's pure and small body is scheduled to be buried in her hometown. The city is preparing to bid a bitter farewell to its heroic daughter. People, friends, classmates, and coaches will gather to bury her with tears and respect. Helena's Last Championship Mr. Farashi, a close relative of the family, said in an interview with the "Haft Sobh" reporter: "Helena was an angel. She always had a smile on her face. Even in the most difficult training sessions, she did not despair. She was a sweet-spoken, lovely and very intelligent girl. Even now, when I am talking about her, I cannot believe that she is no longer with us when I remember the lovely little girl of the family." Gholamreza Ghandipour, head of the Lorestan Karate Federation, also said: "The loss of this 11-year-old athlete is a great loss not only for the Lorestan sports community, but also for the entire country. Talents like Helena are rare. We have lost not only a champion, but also a bright future." Ghandimur continued: "Helena won championships in freestyle disciplines as well as international competitions." But perhaps the deepest loss is her mother's contribution. A mother still in the hospital bed, unaware that her daughter will never return to her arms. What greater grief could there be? Helena is gone, but her smiles, her powerful screams in the ring, her image of courage, and the dreams she held will live on. A new generation of girls in this land will continue Helena’s path. A path that begins with courage, love, and belief… even if it sometimes remains unfinished.
