On the afternoon of Friday, March 27, 2026, Abbas Bahrami Kerkondi, a worker at a steel complex in Mobarakeh city located in the Isfahan province of Iran, was killed, and 16 civilians were reportedly injured in an alleged Israeli and/or US airstrike on the steel complex. Due to Abbas’ affiliation with the Basij – a militia making up one of the five branches of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps – he has been provisionally graded as a militant and his death not included in the civilian harm calculation for this incident. The names of the 16 injured civilians were not found among local sources.

Mehdi Jamalinejad, Governor of Isfahan, said the attack on the steel plant took the life of one person and led to the injuries of fifteen civilians. A 30-second interview with Medhi was posted by @akhbarefori on Telegram. According to the governor, all victims were employees of the steel plant.

The deputy security and law enforcement officer of the Isfahan Governorate, who spoke to the Student News Agency, corroborated this information, noting that 16 civilians were injured and one was killed. The official said the attack was carried out in the afternoon when the plant was open and the workers were at their stations. According to this official, whose name was not reported, “Rescue and assessment teams were immediately dispatched to the site after the incident to assess the extent of the human and material damages.”

Tasnim news agency, referring to the management of the Mobarakeh Steel Complex, confirmed 16 injuries, noting that three of them had been transferred to the hospital for further treatment.

On Twitter/X, @Sasan_Danesh, @mozhgan_baladi, and @Yazeinab139700 reported the death of Abbas Bahrami Kerkondi and shared a photo of the young man, showing him with a beard dressed in black, sitting in front of a teapot and a tray with glasses, pressing his hand to the chest. A video shared by @noorasadatt on Instagram showed an episode from Abbas’s funeral when his mother, standing near a coffin with her son’s body, wrapped in the Iranian flag, spoke into a microphone: “Thank you, everyone, for coming to the funeral. My son was like his Shia saints. When he was killed, he had no hand, no back and half of his head. He was a Basiji member, and he was mourning for his leader’s death every day…”

The Basij is a paramilitary volunteer militia making up one of the five branches of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). As the IRGC is a state armed force, and the Basij is a constituent branch, individuals cited as being members of the Basij have been recorded as militants unless sources reported a formal end to their affiliation.

According to a report by BBC Location name local, Isfahan Mobarakeh Steel Company, as the largest steel producer in the Middle East and North Africa region, has a share of about one percent of Iran’s gross domestic product, which indicates the strategic importance of this complex in the national economy. The report claimed that the attack on March 27 not only resulted in civilian casualties but also led to serious damage to the critical parts of the complex, including the 914-megawatt and 250-megawatt power plants, which had a direct impact on production.

On Telegram, @irna_1313 added an image showing rescue operations where three emergency responders, wearing red-white uniforms and red helmets, were inspecting the site of the incident.

On Twitter/X, @bentzionmacales shared a satellite image of the steel plant, showing significant damage to the facilities.
