On August 6th 2022, six missiles were reported to hit several adjacent houses located near the Kuwaiti Hospital in al-Shatout, in Rafah city, in the Gaza Strip, as a result of reported IDF action. Up to five civilians were reported killed, including one child and two to three women, and reportedly up to 43 others were injured, including 18 children and 12 women.

Local sources identified the civilians that were killed as: Ismail Abdelhamid Salama, aged 30, his mother Hanaa Ismail Dwiek Salama, aged 50, and Alaa Saleh Abdul Mohsen Al-Mallahi, aged 30, and Mohammed Iyad Hassouna, aged 13 or 14. @katyushia2 reported that three women were among those killed.

One child who was injured was identified as Souad Hassouna, the elder sister of Mohammed Hassouna, who was killed. Souad Hassouna was taken to hospital after being recovered from the rubble, where she was for “hours.” @arabi21 added that Souad is a student that works hard in school in order to fulfill her dream of completing university studies and helping her family.

Another member of the family, Iyad Hassouna was reportedly injured and arrived at hospital and had to have 14 surgeries to remove shrapnel from his body, in addition to having two of his toes amputated. He was the father of Mohammad and Souad. An image by @Palestine_Gaz shows Iyad being treated in the hospital and saying goodbye to his son Mohammad that was killed. A Facebook post by Tal`at added that under the rubble they also found “the mother Elft and her children, Ahmed and Amr, all of them injured” indicating they are related to Iyad, Mohammad, and Souad. Mondoweiss also identified that all six members of the family were injured in the strikes.

According to @myhasna1981, just before the strike Alaa had asked her husband to run out to the supermarket to buy her something and asked him to take her only son Zera’a with him. Minutes after they left, their home was bombed. Mondoweiss added that Alaa was crushed beneath the apartment complex and her father told Mondoweiss “What sin did an innocent person like my daughter do to be killed in such a way?”

Mondoweiss reported that Ismael was recently engaged and that his family of eight was preparing for his wedding to Abeer Harb. Ismael was killed alongside his mother Hanaa, a mother of six whose husband Abdul-Hamid and her other children were out of the house at the time of the strike. Abdul-Hamid told Mondoweiss that after learning of the airstrike, he rushed home with the hopes that he would find his wife still alive but he was shocked to find both his wife and his son Ismael dead.

@PalHadath2 tweeted that the house of the Al-Mudallal family in Rafah was struck in the attack. The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights reported that the warplanes destroyed a house and seven neighboring homes.

According to PHCR Gaza Report, the Civil Defense and Muncipality crews continued to recover the dead and injured from the rubble until 5am on Sunday August 7th 2022.

Ziad Ahmed Khalil al-Mudalal, aged 35, who was killed was reportedly a militant from Al-Quds Brigade. According to PHCR Gaza Report, the IDF declared that the airstrike had targeted and killed Khaled Saeed Mansour, aged 48, commander of Al-Quds Brigades in the southern Gaza Strip. It was reported that Ziad Ahmad Khalil Al-Mudallal, aged 35, and Raafat Saleh Ibrahim Al-Zamili, aged 41, were also killed. All three were members of PIJ and declared by the Al-Quds Brigades and Mondoweiss reported that at the time of the strike Mansour and other PIJ leaders were meeting.

Most reports indicated that seven people were killed in this attack in total, but a few sources mentioned that the number of dead was eight and that there was another “unidentified martyr” according to the Civil Defense.

A Facebook post by Aya.naser described the area that was bombed as being a crowded place where the houses are close together, and that “the surrounding neighbors decided to demolish their homes in order to help the equipment enter the place and rescue their neighbors who were under the rubble”.

According to local sources, there was no prior warning before Israeli forces targeted the area. The IDF released a statement following the incident: “This is Khaled Mansour. As the Islamic Jihad’s Southern Gaza Division Commander, he was responsible for dozens of terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians & soldiers. Last night, he was targeted & killed by IDF aircraft. We will continue to act against any threat to Israel.”
