On Monday, March 2, 2026, a 19-year-old Iranian wrestler, Mehdi Abdollah Nezhad, was killed and his brother, Mahmood Abdollah Nezhad, was severely injured in an alleged Israeli and/or U.S. strike in Alborz Province, Iran. Mehdi was reportedly killed either in city of Nazarabad or Garm Darreh, both located in Alborz Province.
On the morning of March 2, @Nournews_ir reported (via Telegram) that “Mehdi Abdollahnejad, a wrestler from Alborz province who won a bronze medal in the 79 kg weight category in the national youth freestyle wrestling championship last January, was martyred in attacks by American and [Israeli] enemies” and shared a portrait of the young man with brown hair, a trimmed beard, and wearing athletic clothing. According to a Fars News report published the following evening, Mehdi was “an ordinary athlete, not a military person, not a political figure, an athlete who was alien to weapons, the system, and military warfare, but was a hero on the sports field and had just won the bronze medal of the transnational competitions a few days ago.”
On March 4, Khabarfoori published an article with further details about the victims, Mehdi and Mahmoud Nezhad. In an interview with the news outlet, Mehdi’s coach, Akbar Lotfi, expressed that “Mehdi was a hero. He started wrestling under my supervision at the age of six. From his childhood, he was smarter than others and more interested in this sport.” Akbar praised the young athlete, saying “he never gave up on his dreams, and one of his biggest goals was to be on the national team. In the year when he was getting close to achieving all his goals, he was martyred by the enemy, completely destroying his dream of becoming a champion. A few days ago, he gave his passport to the federation and was supposed to go to the world championship with the national beach wrestling team.”
According to the coach, on the day of the strike, Mehdhi “had gone out shopping with his brother Mahmoud in the morning, and when he returned, Mahmoud suggested that they go to his workplace. The moment they arrived and got out of the car, a missile hit a nearby building and Mehdi was buried under the rubble. His brother was also thrown back by the blast wave and shrapnel tore off his leg.” The coach concluded the interview by saying, “I want to send a message to Mehdi that his place among us will always be empty.”
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to the U.S. and/or Israeli military.
