Last Updated: August 9, 2025

During the afternoon of October 12, 2024, at least 17 people, including eight women and three children, were killed and at least 12 others were wounded by alleged Israeli airstrikes on a home in the town of al-Maaysara in the Mount Lebanon Governorate, Lebanon.

A tweet from @PalinfoAr quoted the Lebanese Ministry of Health which reported that nine people had been killed and 15 injured in an “update” on the toll from Israeli strikes on al-Maaysara. Posts the following day quoted the Ministry as saying that 16 had been killed and 21 injured.

The Lebanese Civil Defense published a more comprehensive breakdown of their search and rescue operations after the Israeli raid on a “3-storey residential building”. Among injuries, the Civil Defense transferred two injuries in critical condition, a two-year-old child in critical condition, and another injury to Saydet Maritime Hospital, in addition to transferring two injuries and retrieving from under the rubble and transferring another injury to Saydet Maounat Hospital. Four more injured people were also rescued from under the rubble. Among the deceased, the Civil Defense retrieved the body of one person and transported him to Saydet Maounat Hospital, retrieved the bodies of two females from under the rubble, transferred the body of a person to al-Buwar Governmental Hospital, retrieved the body of a person and transferring it to al-Buwar Governmental Hospital, and retrieved the bodies of two people from under the rubble and transferred one of them to al-Buwar Governmental Hospital. The Civil Defense published their final toll when they stopped rescue operations at 4:30am the following morning – 17 killed, 12 wounded.

The day after the strike, the “Communication for digital media in Mount Lebanon and the North” Facebook account provided a list of the names of those killed in al-Maaysara: Abdullah Amr, his wife Wafiqa Amr, their son Muhammad Abdullah Amr, their daughter Sayyida Abdullah Amr (Jaafar), Sayyida’s daughter Sara Muhammad Mahdi Jaafar, Safaa Amr, Fatiha Makki, 17-year-old Ali Ahmed Jaafar, Fatima Reda Jaafar, Rasmiya Nasrallah Shalhoub and her four children, daughters Alaa Ali Shalhoub and Anwar Ali Shalhoub and sons Hassan Ali Shalhoub and Ali al-Reda Ali Shalhoub, Ahmed Ali Karaki, and Hassan Mahmoud Fadel. A woman named Fatima Safi al-Din, wife of Ahmed Sheikh Ali Jaafar, was also identified as among those killed in the raid in al-Maaysara.

A Facebook post from Tariq Mazraani mourned the loss of his dear friend, “the ambitious young man with many project and ideas” Hassan Mahmoud Fadel, son of the late Hajj Abu Faris Fadel. The post mentioned that Hassan had left his hometown of Toulin “after much deliberation” and mentioned that he was from a “struggling, combative, and jihadist family” – it is unclear whether this is meant metaphorically or is indicative of militant status but absent additional information, Hassan has been counted as a civilian until additional information is found.

A young man named Ahmed Ali Karaki from Khirbet Salm was also killed in the same attack, the “second massacre of al-Maaysara” according to Aboali Souhad whose post about Ahmed included an image of him smiling and wearing a Burberry shirt. Ershed Muna published a Hezbollah-styled memorial image of Ahmed wearing camouflage and a keffiyah scarf but there is no additional insignia or information. It is unclear if this is meant to communicate militant status, therefore Ahmed has been counted as a “contested” civilian until further information comes to light.

Multiple posts including from Fadi Jouni, Yajnoub 2 News, and others reported the death of Professor Muhammad Amr, Director of the Maaysara Technical Institute. Professor Amr is pictured in front of a sign mentioning multiple technical institutes in Lebanon, including the institute that he was the director of, as well as with a camera. Samah Kanaan Amr, the wife of Professor Amr, lamented the pain of losing the one she loved: “My heart is broken and torn apart, my soul is tormenting me, and my breath is aching. By God, separation is hard and bitter. I love you and I will always love you. No, love is not an inadequate word because what is between us is much bigger than that. These two days will remain the worst and most difficult days of my life.” She also described the loss of the family home: “How can I look out the window and find that my uncle’s beautiful house, which everyone envied us for its seating and beautiful view, has become this ugly view, or rather, without a view, it has become an empty square and nothing more?” Their sons Musa and Ali lost his grandfather, his aunt, and his father in the attack. Samah continued to express the heavy pain from her loss in the days after the attack, and posted an image of herself and Muhammad dressed in formal outfits and an image of both of them with their two very young children.

On February 18th, 2025, the “Martyr Muhammad Abdullah Amr Hall” was opened at al-Maaysara Technical Institute in commemoration of their director who was killed – in the video, Muhammad’s oldest con is seen cutting the ribbon and cutting the cake during the opening ceremony.

A Facebook post from Huda Muslumani memorialized her friend Sayyida Amr, adding that “We knew her to be a believer, honest, serious, upright, hardworking, polite, methodical in her thinking and behavior, and administrative in her work.” Al-Jinan University identified Sayyida as a graduate of their College of Public Health and paid tribute to Sayyida and the members of her family killed. Inass Koteich also mourned Sayyida and her daughter Sarah, and included an image of Sayyida in a colourful green and brown hijab and an image of Sarah sitting at a table full of pottery and paint for a do-it-yourself craft, which she was selling to raise money for university.

According to @ChaabaneHussein, Fatima Reda was her teacher and her mother’s lifelong friend, and had been killed after being displaced and was killed along with eight of her relatives. At the time of posting, her 17-year-old son Ali (likely Ali Ahmed Jaafar) was still missing but was later reported as killed.

The members of the Shalhoub family who were killed were also refugees and had been displaced from the town of Qana in southern Lebanon. The Sayyidat Nisa’ al-‘Alamin Cultural Institute in Beirut offered condolences for the death of one of their graduates, Rasmiya, and her four children.

Touba News published a memorial for Anwar Ali Shalhoub, who was a volunteer in the Touba Youth Organization, a servant in the Central Organization Team, and a member of the Rowad Academy. Anwar is pictured as a young woman in a black hijab in an auditorium, possibly related to academics. Anwar and her sister Alaa were also recognized and mourned by the Beirut Girl Guides as scouts in the “Seventh Sector”.

Both Ali al-Reda and Hassan were members of the Al-Abyad Neighborhood Brigade scouts and were pictured smiling in their scout uniforms. The Baqiyatullah Quranic Institute – Beirut also identified both brothers as students and posted videos of both boys reciting different verses from the Quran.

Multiple sources referred to the residential building which was struck as housing displaced people. The “target” of the strike was reportedly the house of citizen Abdullah Amr. A tweet from @hussenfakih similarly mentioned that a building belonging to the al-Amr familly was struck but that there were also wounded from the al-Faghali family.

Images published by Rudaw News showed the “aftermath” of the airstrike – a destroyed Honda SUV can be seen being moved by a digger machine among a pile of rubble, while other digger machines sort through the remains of the building and at least one body is being carried away wrapped in black cloth.

In video published by @mayadeenlebanon explaining what happened during the attack, the correspondent said that the attack struck a house which had 24 people inside, most of whom were women and children, and many had been displaced from southern Lebanon because of the heavy bombardment.

When interviewed after the attack, the mayor of al-Maaysara can be heard telling a @waqa2e3 correspondent that al-Maaysara has no missile platforms or military centers.
