Airwars assessment
Shortly before 1pm on Monday, September 23rd 2024, an alleged Israeli airstrike struck two homes in the town of Al-Saksakieh in the Sidon District of south Lebanon, reportedly killing at least ten civilians, including at least one child and four women.
Twitter/X users @YeniSafakArabic and @sputnik_ar were the first to report the alleged Israeli strike on Al-Saksakieh at 1:01 PM and 1:05 PM, respectively. @Sputnik_ar also shared a photo showing a white cloud of smoke rising over the residential buildings.
Social media tributes, including one by Hajj Muhammad Anwar Haidar, helped to identify the names of the 11 victims of the attack.
Three sisters, elderly women Hajjah Latifa Mohammed Abbas (Umm Adham), Hajjah Fatima Mohammed Abbas, and Yousra Mohamed Abbas (Umm Ali Saleh) were reportedly killed in the attack. Fatima was a teacher at Al-Saksakieh Intermediate Public School. The school shared a post on Facebook mourning the loss of their staff member in the alleged Israeli attack. Multiple sources shared a collective image of the three sisters wearing black dresses and black hijabs.
Hajja Fatima Faqih, wife of Hajj Abbas Haidar, was killed alongside her two daughters Hasnaa Abbas Haider and Nadia Abbas Haider.
Mohammed al-Arab (Abu Najib) was reportedly killed alongside his son Hassan Mohammed al-Arab. Two other members of the family, Mohammed Nasr al-Arab and Kholoud Yahya al-Arab were also reportedly killed in the alleged Israeli attack.
Headshots of the three men who had been killed in the attack were included in a photo collage of the victims, which was shared by many social media sources. Mohammad al-Arab (Abu Nijab) was a middle aged man with grey hair and a grey beard, wearing a blue shirt and a ring with a black stone on his ring finger. Marwa Asili wrote that he “used to mourn the funerals and lead them, but tomorrow will be his funeral.” She added that he “was a supporter of this Husseini march and this resistance line.”
Mohammed’s son, Hassan al-Arab was pictured as a young man with a beard. Marwa Asili called him “the friendly mujahid.” With no other indications of possible militant status found through open sources, Hassan has been listed by Airwars as a civilian in the upper casualty range and also a potential belligerent in the upper belligerent range to account for ambiguity. Airwars will update the incident should new information become available.
Mohammed Nasr al-Arab was pictured as a middle aged man with a beard. In one image shared to social media, he’s seen dressed in a black T-shirt with a white collar and jeans. Marwa Asili wrote that with his death, he “left the children and the bereaved wife.”
According to a Facebook post from Richard Masri, Kholoud Yahya al-Arab was a member and graduate of a number of organisations, including the Imam al-Sadr Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that aims to fight illiteracy, poverty, illness, and violence while promoting social justice, and the Rahab al-Zahraa Charity and Al-Afaq Institute for Development, the first vocational and technical education institution in Lebanon. Al-Sadr Foundation, Rahab Al-Zahraa Charity “PBUH” and Al-Afaq Institute mourned her death, sharing an image of a young woman in glasses, wearing a white hijab and graduation robes.
Jouri Mohammed Halal was the also named as killed in the strike. An image of Jouri was shared by a number of users on social media. A young girl, Jouri is seen smiling, wearing a flowery dress.
Other posts to social media showed a photo of another young girl reportedly killed in the attack. While the ages of Hasnaa and Nadia were not available at the time of writing, it’s unclear if this image depicts Hasnaa, Nadia, or another child, whose name isn’t otherwise recorded. The upper fatality range for children has been recorded as four, to account for this uncertainty.
Some initial reports on the attack claimed that between five and nine people were killed. This number likely rose as more casualties were discovered under the rubble of the homes.
Photos shared by @Ahmadhamieh313 via Twitter/X showed a large area of rubble between two heavily damaged buildings.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli Military.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
