Airwars assessment

At least seven civilians and two militants, all members of the Haribi family, including four women and three children, were killed and a number of others injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Haribi family house in the Aqaba neighbourhood of the village of Buraiqa (Buriqa) located in the al-Nabatieh governorate in southern Lebanon on Monday, September 23, 2024.

Telegram channel Lebanon News reported about the death of nine people in Buraiqa at 14:53, attaching an image of a severely destroyed building and piles of rubble on the ground. News agency Press Bee also reported about a number of wounded members of the same family.

Telegram channel “Echo of Dahieh Page” and other social media sources posted by friends and relatives provided the names of those killed in the strike.

Haja Safiya Wajih Murad, wife of Hajj Abbas Haribi, was killed alongside her son Muhammad Abbas Haribi, her three daughters – Fatima Abbas HaribiZainab Abbas Haribi, and Nour Abbas Haribi, her son-in-law, Nour’s husband Hassan Ali Najdi and her three grandchildren, children of Zainab and Nour – Ali Hassan Najdi and Fatima Hassan Najdi, and a child of Zainab, Muhammad Mustafa Najdi. Hassan Ali Najdi has been classified as a militant by Airwars after a post on Facebook by Sarah Najdi depicted Hassan as a martyr of militant group Hezbollah. Muhammad Abbas Haribi has also been classified as a militant as he was pictured in camouflage by multiple sources including Asmaa Ahmed Tawfik, and referred to as a “mujahid”.

GLIS media and other sources shared a family photo featuring the smiling Safiya standing with her adult children: three daughters and a son.

Yasser Abu Elmakarem wrote a tribute to the family of his wife’s cousin Safia Murad. He wrote about them: “Rise to the side of God – Martyrs on the Road to Jerusalem.”

Two daughters of Safya, Zainab and Fatima Haribi, were teachers at Shokin Public School, according to the Al-sama news network. The news agency reported that “the Minister of Education and Higher Education in the caretaker government, Dr. Abbas Al-Halabi, mourned those who died as a result of the attack on their regions and schools, with great sadness and sorrow.” Megaphone Facebook account added that Zainab and Fatima were among four female teachers killed by the alleged Israeli bombardment in Lebanon on September 23, 2024.

Facebook user Ali Kazan mourned the death of suspected militant Al-Saeed Hassan Ali Najdi and “his entire family”, including his wife and two small children. He shared an image of Hassan with his children Ali Hassan and Fatima – a young boy and girl.

Sarah Ali Najdi also grieved the death of Hassan, his wife Nour, and their children as well as the death of Zainan who was married to Hassan’s brother Mustafa and their child Muhammed. She wrote: “I do not lament for you, it is not permissible to lament”. She also shared a collage where the daughters of Safiya, Zainab, and Nour, are portrayed with their children.

Facebook account “My city Srifa” wrote that the town of Srifa was “saddened by the martyrdom of Hassan Najdi and his entire honorable family (his wife and two children)” and informed that the burial would take place the next day at a cemetery in Srifa.

Websites South Braikeh and South 24 shared pictures from the Haribi family’s funeral, which featured the transportation of bodies, funeral prayer, and fresh tombs made of white marble slabs.

Zaiocity.net reported that the Lebanese Civil Defense teams were working to remove the rubble and transport the casualties resulting from the alleged Israeli strike on the southern regions, emphasizing that “the town of Buriqa was subjected to an air strike that led to the destruction of a number of homes there and the deaths of martyrs.”

Individuals from the civil defense group, the Islamic Health Authority, responded to the alleged strike. While the Islamic Health Authority is associated with Hezbollah, and Hezbollah operates an active militant wing, their political presence is also deeply enmeshed within the state, providing social and organisational services, primarily in the Shia’a majority areas in Southern Lebanon, the Beqaa Valley, and the suburbs of Beirut. With this context in mind, and given that there are no indications of militant activities, the presence of the Islamic Health Authority cannot be used to determine if an individual or community is affiliated with Hezbollah’s armed wing, or that there was a militant presence in the area.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
