Airwars assessment

At least 26 civilians, including at least five women and seven children, were reportedly killed and five others were injured after an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the outskirts of Al-Numayriyah in southern Lebanon shortly before 8 AM on Monday, 23 September 2024. According to Sayed Abouali’s Facebook post, at least ten of those killed were Syrians.

Twitter/X account of Alaraby TV was the first to report the incident at 7:56 AM but did not mention civilian casualties.

Airwars was able to find the names of all 26 individuals likely killed in the strike, as well as the names of the four civilians injured. No individuals identified online appeared to have connection with a militant group, though in a photo collage shared by multiple social media users, one of those killed, Mahmoud Badran, can be seen holding a gun. No logos can be seen on the weapon and he is not pictured in camouflage or likely uniform. Given the context and no further indication that Badran was a member of an armed group, he has been classified as a civilian by Airwars until further information comes to light.

Another individual was also likely to be a member of the Lebanese Armed Forces. In a Facebook post from user Sayed Abouali, an unnamed man is pictured in military camouflage with an insignia of the Lebanese Armed Forces on his sleave. At the time of writing, the Lebanese Armed Forces have not been party to the conflict, and there is no information to suggest that the individual pictured is any exception. This individual has therefore not been included in the militant range. This assessment will be updated should additional information come to light concerning the Lebanese Armed Forces’ role in the conflict or further details about this individual. Although the source did not name this individual, given the context of the post it is possible he is one of those already named in the incident. To avoid double counting, Airwars has included him in the upper casualty toll only.

Among those also killed were Mahmoud Badran, Zainab Bradran, Zahraa Badran, Maryam Ibrahim, and the “angel” child Ali Ghanem Hamza. A Facebook post by Bintjbeil News shared a collage of four of the victims – one young man and three women of different ages, all wearing headscarves of different colours. Three victims had the same surname so there is a likelihood they are members of the same family, although this was not explicitly stated by sources.

Zahraa Badran was remembered by her friend Fatima Khansaa as a “true and loyal friend.” Fatima expressed her shock at the news of her friend’s death: “I never imaged that a day would come when I would mourn you” and emphasized how she would commemorate her friend by “tell[ing] my daughter a lot about you.” She shared a photograph of the two women, smiling and enjoying iced coffees, writing “I love you very much.” Zahraa was a young woman when she was killed and Rana Nahle, Zahraa’s sister, also mourned her death.

Ali Ghanem Hamza was a young boy and was pictured wearing a sweater, jeans and a jacket in a picture shared by Zefta Press.

Sarah Najm Najm was killed alongside her sister Sahar Najm Najm, and Sahar’s young son whose name is not provided. A post from Youssof Wehbi memorialized Sahar and her son, along with an image of Sahar and her son smiling with a festive background.

Rima Shaib and Kulthum Jizi were killed, as were two members of the Hashem family – Mahdi Mohammed Hashem and Hussein Abdullah Hashem.

Hassan Faris Tafeeli was killed alongside his three young children – daughter Fatima Hassan Tafeeli and sons Ali Hassan Tafeeli and Mohammed Hassan Tafeeli. Hassan Faris Tafeeli was remembered by Yaakoub Badran as a “young, pure [and] good believer”. An attached photograph pictured Hassan with his young children and the AMAL logo can be seen in the upper corner. AMAL is a political party that used to operate a militia and is now allied with Hezbollah. As there is no explicit indication of militant activities, Hassan has been counted as a civilian.

A Syrian national Ahmed Lasad Aswad was killed alongside his two children: Asaad Muhammad Aswad and infant Ahmed Mohammed Aswad. The two Aswad children were remembered by family member Mohamed Moonier Mounir as “beloved” and his “heart.” Infant Ahmed Mohammed Aswad was pictured in a second post: a baby, Ahmed is swaddled.

Among other Syrians who were killed in the strike, a Facebook user Mohammad Ezzedine mentioned Jamila al-Shahabi, Rowan Dalati, Ruya al-Shahabi, Rama al-Mahiou, Rama al-Dilati, and the siblings Ruya Mohammed Mahiou and Gram Mohammed Mahiou.

The injured were reported by Sayed Abouali as Aanem Hamza, Ali Dawood Badran, Hadi Abdullah Hashem, Shawky Ibrahim, and Jawed Abdullah. The extent or severity of their injuries has not been made available.

Multiple sources attached images of the strike’s aftermath, showing huge plumes of white smoke rising above the city outskirts. A video shared by Facebook user Roro Nour showed the damage in more immediate detail.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.

The incident occured at approximately 8:00 am local time.
