On September 23rd, 2024, at least two civilians, 14-year-old Nour Al-Zaahra Muhammad Toba and her mother, Samar Hussein Aliq, were killed by alleged Israeli missile strikes on their home in Mayfadoun, southern Lebanon.

The killing of Nour and her mother Samar was reported by multiple local sources, with the Mayfadoun Intermediate School mentioning that they were killed along with “a number of their relatives.”

Nour, born on July 8th, 2010, was remembered as “the one with the gentle smile,” with “everything about her suggesting life, dreams, joy, and enthusiasm,” according to a Facebook post from Mayfadoun Intermediate School, where she had been a student. Family and friends expressed their sorrow through tributes on social media. “May God have mercy on you, Hajja Samar, you are pure and honorable,” wrote Ali and Mohammad Safa, “and may He have mercy on your daughter, the light of Mayfadoun, Nour Muhammad Toba” in addition to an image of Nour and her mother Samar.

According to Al Ahed News, at least two Israeli airstrikes hit the town of Mayfadoun that day. Neighbor Hajj Muhammad Jaber, head of the Nabatieh Traders Organization Association, and his family survived the attack that killed Nour, Samar, and “all of those inside” of the home, which was adjacent to the Jabers’. In a video posted by Nabatieh TV, a home had been completely reduced to rubble within a huge crater, and damage to what seems to be Hajj Muhammad Jaber’s house next to the rubble can be seen. The victims were transported by the Al Risala Association for Health Aid.

Photographs shared by the Mayfadoun troops of the Islamic Risala Scouts Association later depicted a funeral procession for Nour and Samar, showing a crowd gathered in prayer behind the victims. Nour was a member of the Association of Scouts of the Islamic Message, also known as “Al-Risala Scouts,” as identified in a message posted by the association and the Amal Movement memorializing their “missionary guide,” Nour. Nour is pictured in a scout uniform in multiple photos. Al-Risala Scouts Organisation is a member of the Scouts Federation of Lebanon, and the Federation itself is part of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
