Airwars assessment

On Monday, September 23, 2024, an alleged Israeli airstrike on the town of Aitaroun in South Lebanon killed a journalist of Al-Mayadeen Online Hadi Hashem Sayed Hassan alongside six other men, five of them civilians and one likely a militant.

The following day on X/Twitter, user @Hakeam_ps shared that Hadi Hassan was killed after an Israeli airstrike hit his home in southern Lebanon. Another post by @TarrafBissan relayed condolences to Hussein Sayed Hassan, an Al-Mayadeen Online correspondent, on his brother Hadi’s death. On Facebook, multiple posts, including from the users Hassan Haitham Hallal and Reda M Albasha, confirmed Hadi’s death.

Al-Mayadeen Media Network mourned Hadi’s death in its post, sharing an image of him – a young man wearing glasses.

The Aitaroun Page listed other residents from Aitaroun who were killed in the incident: Mahdi Fadel Baalbaki and his father Haji Fadel Hassan Baalbaki (likely a militant), Ibrahim Mohammad Issa, Mohammad Ibrahim Ayoub, 20-year-old Hussein Khader Mawasi, and Khalil Hussein Hassan.

On September 25, 2024, the Aytaroun Facebook page mentioned the 21st birthday of Hussein Khader Mawasi, noting him among those killed. An image of the late Hussein, a young man wearing a white T-shirt, was shared by the source.

Hassan Mawassi also confirmed the death of Khalil Hussein Hassan in the airstrike, calling him his “second father.” He shared an image of Khalil, a middle-aged man wearing a blue shirt and a black suit.

Hisham Hassan wrote in his Facebook post about the death of Ibrahim Mohammed Issa, sharing an image of a man dressed in a black T-shirt. Aytaroun page also mourned the death of Ibrahim.

Yajnoub 2 Facebook page mentioned Mohammed Ibrahim Ayoub among the killed, sharing a photo of a young man dressed in a white T-shirt, a denim jacket and jeans.

In a post by Homs Al-Adayi, one of the victims, Haji Fadel Hassan Baalbaki was named a “leader of the Lebanese Hezbollah militia” along with an image of Fadel wearing a military uniform attached to the post. Based on this information, Airwars has counted Fadel as a militant.

Mohamed Hijazi wrote a tribute to Fadel’s son Mahdi Baalbaki, sharing a photo of a young man dressed in an Adidas track suit.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.

The local time of the incident is unknown.
