On 24th September 2024, multiple social media posts reported the deaths of mother and son, Nadia Mahmoud Talib and Qasim Ahmed Khalil, following alleged Israeli actions on their home in the town of Al-Bissariya, Southern Lebanon.
In the days following the incident, multiple people took to social media to share images of Nadia and Qasim. Although Qasim’s exact age was not mentioned, based on imagery it is likely he was a teenager.
Posting to Facebook, Rima Charara shared the news of the passing of Nadia and Qasim, inviting friends and family to give their condolences to Nadia’s uncle, Kamal Tarfa, based in Dearborn, Michigan in the United States.
A few days later, Rima shared a poster from The Islamic Center of America, Michigan, announcing the deaths of Nadia and Qasim and publicising their Fatiha (commemoration service). Included in the poster is a list of Nadia and Qasim’s relations, including Nadia’s parents, Hajj Mahmoud Taleb and Hajji Mona Turfa; as well as the name of Nadia’s husband and Qasim’s father, Ahmad Khalil.
Sheikh Abbas Hassan Shami took to Facebook to share an image of Qasim’s name handwritten in a list, writing that he “will no longer register [Qasim’s] name for ‘scouting trips, camps and meetings…because you registered your name in the register of immortals.”
Sarafand Official High School, seemingly the school Qasim attended, also posted a commemorative post in the wake of his death. Writing that Qasim was a “new arrival to our high school,” the post asked that “God protect” him.
The Al-Baysariah Regiment Facebook account shared an image of a teenage boy in uniform with a sash around his head and paid tribute to Qasim, who they describe as a “martyred scout.”
The Al-Baysariah Regiment is the Facebook account associated with the Al-Mahdi Scouts, a Hezbollah-affiliated scouting organisation that is registered with the Lebanese Scouting Federation. While Hezbollah operates an active militant wing, their political presence is also deeply enmeshed within the state, providing social and organisational services, primarily in the Shia majority areas in Southern Lebanon, the Beqaa Valley, and the suburbs of Beirut. With this context in mind, and given that there is no indication of militant activities, Qasim has been counted as a civilian.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed responsibility to Israeli forces.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
The victims were named as:
