Airwars assessment
On September 24, 2024, at least five civilians were reported killed and between ten and 25 others injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike at night or dawn in Aaqbieh, a residential area in the Saida (Sidon) District of the South Governorate, Lebanon.
One of the victims was identified as Mohammed bin Ali Mohammed al-Aloush al-Muajir. His death was reported by Facebook user Gernas l-Naimi (جرناس النعيمي), who posted a mourning message on behalf of the “Al-Naimi tribe” and “Al-Muajir clan”. This post received numerous comments honouring Al-Muajir’s life.
Several media outlets, including Lebanon News and Mtv News (mtv.com.lb), reported on the incident, sharing images of the affected area. The pictures depict a heavily damaged residential neighbourhood consisting of medium-sized, two-story houses. The images also show the Sarhan Pharmacy, which was severely damaged in the attack. Twitter user @YasmeenElsay3 shared a photograph showing local residents working to control fires ignited by the strike.
The media outlet Blinx (@BlinxNow) posted a video on their Twitter account showing the aftermath of the strike, including footage of the Sarhan Pharmacy and the efforts of the Lebanese Civil Defense to extinguish the fires. This footage corroborated earlier reports and photographs, confirming the extensive damage.
According to Alakhbar News (@AlakhbarNews), the strike targeted a home that had provided refuge to a displaced family from Bint Jbeil, as well as nearby shops where Syrian nationals were staying. The outlet reported a death toll of 10 but did not provide names or further details.
Other media outlets, such as Al Jadeed TV and AJA Egypt, also shared videos showing the fires and destruction caused by the airstrike. The Beirut City Facebook page, managed by Sawt Beirut International, and Wafa News Agency posted a video of the aftermath on the following day, revealing the extent of the damage, with at least three residential houses completely destroyed and several cars severely damaged.
A Facebook post from Al Barakat identified five deaths and 10 wounded in the strike. In an update from Facebook user Bent Aljanoub, the final death toll was reported as six—four Lebanese citizens and two Syrian nationals—and 25 wounded, including 10 Lebanese and 15 Syrians. No further details regarding the victims’ identities were provided, and Airwars was unable to confirm the names of the deceased.
The strike status has been graded as a “likely strike” by Airwars due to multiple sources mentioning Israel as being responsible for the strike, with the Civilian Harm Status as “fair” due to multiple different sources mentioning the civilian harm.
The incident occured after midnight.
