Airwars Assessment
During the night of August 1st 2024, at least one civilian was reportedly killed and others injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike at the Al-Shujaiya junction to the east of Gaza City.
Multiple news and social media sources reported the attack. Sources suggested that the attack was launched on a group of citizens who were at Al-Shujaiya junction at the time. Some sources suggested that three people were killed in the attack while others reported that two people were killed. No additional names were given for those reportedly killed aside from Muhammad al-Jaabari.
While none of the sources provided a specific injury toll, @Sa7atPlBreaking reported “a number of injuries” resulting from the attack.
Both Aasem Hassan al-Jaabari and Abu Malek al-Jaabari reported that their cousin Muhammad al-Jaabari was killed at the Al-Shujaiya junction, and Abu Malek al-Jaabari included an image of Muhammad, a young man smiling at the camera while wearing a polo hat and glasses.
When Airwars originally published this incident on December 24, 2024, no open sources were found to suggest that Muhammad al-Jabaari (Muhammad Shaker al-Jaabari) was a militant. As such, Muhammad was recorded as a civilian. This was in line with Airwars’ methodology which is employed across all conflicts we document, and informed by international standards regarding the ‘presumption of civilian status‘. Specifically, as outlined by the International Committee of the Red Cross, civilian status is assumed until evidence is identified to the contrary.
However, on February 24, 2026, the official page representing Saraya al-Quds, the armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), published a list and photos of PIJ commanders who had been killed over the course of the preceding months. Muhammad was named as a commander and “Assistant to the Manufacturing Unit (Military)” and a photo of him in uniform was attached. As such, his status has been updated to militant.
A post on Twitter/X from @AkhbarOrdon reported that the deaths and injuries were caused by artillery shelling. However, the majority of other sources attributed the attack to an Israeli aircraft.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli Military.
