Last Updated: December 15, 2024

Between 30 and 42 people, from a three month old to a 77 year old, were killed and a large number were injured when the home of the Saqa Allah family was reportedly bombed in what was reported to be a “double tap” Israeli airstrike during the night of Wednesday, October 18th 2023. The home was located behind a coffee shop in Sheikh Ajleen near Tal al-Hawa, in the west of the Gaza Strip.

Everyone who had been in the house was reportedly killed. Videos provided to CNN showed “charred ruins and rubble, of what relatives say used to be three buildings” in the Saqallah family compound. Relative’s accounts, reported by CNN, described a first strike followed by a second strike that reduced the compound to rubble and reportedly killed any survivors in the compound.

The victims were identified by their relatives as a set of four brothers 51-year-old Saed Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah, 49-year-old Omar Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah, 43-year-old Khourshid Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah and 37-year-old Ameed Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah (Abu Saif) as well as their sister 47-year-old Maysoon Mohammed Khourshid Saqa Allah and her son and daughter. Saed was killed alongside his wife, Noha Al-Qishawy, their son, 27-year-old Mohammed Saed Khourshid Saqa Allah and his wife 24-year-old Alaa Ayman Jafer Al-Helo as well as Saed’s daughters, two other sons and all of his grandchildren, according to a post by Saleh Abu Muhammad. Omar, also known as Abu Karam, was killed alongside his wife, 47-year-old Sahar Issam Abo Shaban, their daughters, their son 15-year-old Ahmad Omar Khourshid and Sahar’s father, 77-year-old Isam Jalal Abo Shaban. Isam’s wife, 67-year-old Layla Saqa Allah Abo Shaban (Umm Jalal) and their son, Ahmed, and daughter were also killed.

Multiple sources reported that the extended Saqa Allah family had gathered together in one house in Sheikh Aljeen to shelter from the ongoing bombardment of the Gaza Strip. CNN put the number of those killed at 42, while Press TV pointed out that the death toll was between 30 and 42.

CNN interviewed Manal Saqa Allah, the sister of Saed, Omar, Khourshid, Ameed and Maysoon, and her husband Tariq Hamouda, who have both lived in Minnesota, USA since 2004. Manal lost almost all of her family overnight and Tariq said that, even a week later, he and Manal could barely comprehend the news. He said that Manal loved every member of her family and spent the summer with them. Tariq also said that they didn’t have time to mourn as they were worried about the safety of few the who survived.

The elderly mother of Manal, Saed, Omar, Khourshaid, Ameed and Maysoon, referred to as Umm Saed and her grandson Karam Omar Saqa Allah survived the incident according to a Facebook post by Wasim Saqer. Tariq Hamouda reported that Umm Saed had been standing on a balcony when the first strike occurred and she had been able to escape with the help of another surviving relative. Tariq reported that she had said her sons had tried to evacuate but had not had time, adding that his family were not involved in any military activity.

Another American relative, South Florida resident, Eyad Abu Shaban, said “It’s like your whole world stops” and that the number of people killed in the incident is really hard to cope with. Eyad reported that the ages of the victims ranged from three months old to 77 years old and that they were all staying in a single compound.

According to Tariq, surviving family members told him that, before the incident, the Israeli Defense Force had called to say that there could be military activity in the area but had not told the family to evacuate their home. Adding that there had been bombings happening with and without warnings; he lamented the confusion and fear of the situation.

CNN had reached out to the IDF to confirm the strike. The IDF said they couldn’t comment without the coordinates of the house and the family declined to provide them for fear of reprisal.

Eyad Abu Shaban reported that amongst the victims in his family were multiple medical professionals and of the four brothers, Saed, Omar and Khourshid were eye doctors and Ameed was an ENT specialist. The Saqa Allah family ran the largest network of family-owned eye clinics in the Gaza Strip.

Many tributes were made to the family on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), including a post from Adham Al-Sofar E who described the family as “the best people in morals and manner” and “friends like no other”.

CNN reported that the community in Maple Grove, Minnesota had rallied around Tariq and Manal, many had offered their support and others had gone to Brooklyn Park Islamic Center to pray for the family.

Tariq, Manal and Eyad expressed their deep distress to CNN, with Eyad saying “We’ve never seen in this day and age where the whole world is watching innocent people just being torn apart. Families, whole families, just wiped off the map,” and “I want everybody to know that the people of Gaza are just like them, they hurt, they bleed, they have families, they have feelings.”

Many sources reported that the bodies of victims were buried under rubble.

The surviving family members wrapped the victims in white burial shrouds and buried them in a mass grave, shown in a video provided to CNN.

Saed, Omar, Khourshid, Ameed, Maysoon, Mohammed, Sahar, Alaa, Isam, Layla and Ahmed Khourshid were matched to the list of fatalities published by the Palestinian Ministry of Health on October 26, 2023. Their names, ages and ID numbers are listed below.

Saed and Noha’s unnamed sons, daughters and grandchildren as well as Omar and Sahar’s unnamed daughters are not listed below unfortunately as no sources have confirmed how many they are.

The incident is likely to have occurred in the night between October 18 and 19, 2023. However, the exact time of the incident is not known.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli Forces.

Another sacrifice from our people... a group of martyrs, relatives and loved ones, have ascended to martyrdom... We consider them all martyrs, alive with their Lord, receiving sustenance... At this time, I offer my condolences, and those of my family, to our dear uncle Adel Al-Qishawi, his wife, children, and their families, on the loss of our martyr, Nuha Adel Al-Qishawi, along with her husband, three children, and grandchildren. I also extend my deepest condolences to the entire Saqallah family on the martyrdom of our dear ones Saeed, Omar, Khurshid, and Amid/Khurshid Saqallah, along with their children, wives, and grandchildren. Furthermore, I offer my sincere condolences to my in-laws, the Abu Shaaban family, on the death of the martyr Issam Jalal Abu Shaaban, his wife, son, and daughter, who had taken refuge in the destroyed house to protect themselves from this brutal and criminal aggression. Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs. To Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return. I consider my beloved sister, a piece of my heart, and all her family members as living with their Lord, receiving sustenance. May God grant them patience and solace.

The Palestinian Americans, who live in Maple Grove, Minnesota, say it’s been over a week since they learned 42 relatives were killed in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, and they’re still unable to fully comprehend the news. Hamouda says his wife, whose maiden name is Saqallah, lost four brothers, a sister and most of their children when two explosions destroyed the Saqallah family compound on October 19 in the Sheikh Ejleen neighborhood of Gaza City. Hamouda and the family say it was an Israeli airstrike. Israel has launched numerous airstrikes on Gaza City since October 7, including multiple strikes in the area that day. CNN cannot independently confirm that it was an Israeli strike. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it could not comment without coordinates of the house. The family declined to provide CNN with the coordinates for fear of reprisal. A video shot by a neighbor and provided to CNN shows what is left of the family compound; charred ruins and rubble, of what relatives say used to be three buildings, now surrounded by virtually untouched homes in the residential area. “Up until last night, she is still denying [what happened],” Hamouda told CNN on Thursday, referring to Manal. But the grief being felt in their Midwestern home is very real. “She loves every member of her family. She spent the summer with them,” explained Hamouda, who says he and his wife are originally from the same neighborhood in Gaza but have lived in Minnesota since 2004. There has been fear and numerous conflicts between Israel and militant groups in Gaza since then, but nothing like this, he says. Israel declared war on Hamas on October 7, after the militant group broke through the barrier that separates Gaza from Israel and killed more than 1,400 people, including civilians and military personnel, and abducted over 220 others, according to Israeli authorities. In response, Israel launched devastating airstrikes on Gaza. It says it wants to destroy Hamas, which governs the coastal territory. But 2.2 million Palestinians living there, unable to escape with closed Israeli and Egyptian border crossings, are caught in the crossfire. Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 8,485 Palestinians and injured more than 21,000 others, according to the latest figures released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, drawn from sources in the Hamas-controlled enclave. Another 1.4 million people have been internally displaced, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says, after the IDF warned residents in northern Gaza to move south. But Hamouda doesn’t have time to properly mourn the dead, he says, as he is still worried about what will happen to those who’ve so far survived. ‘Your whole world stops’ In South Florida, Manal’s cousin Eyad Abu Shaban is equally distraught. “It’s like your whole world stops,” he said. “It’s not one, two, three, or four – it is 42 members, it’s really hard to cope with.” Abu Shaban says the deceased range in age from three months to 77. They were all staying in a single compound. His uncle, Essam Abu Shaban, wife Layla Saqallah and their son Ahmed were among those killed. To avoid Israeli airstrikes, they had evacuated the nearby Tel El Hawa neighborhood and sought refuge in the Saqallah’s home, Abu Shaban says. Before the airstrikes, the IDF called to say there could be military activity in the area, but they were never told to evacuate their home, Hamouda says surviving family members told him. “They have bombed houses with warnings and without warnings,” he said, lamenting there is a lot of fear, confusion and nowhere to go. His mother-in-law was on a balcony when the first strike hit, Hamouda says. She was able to flee with the help of a relative who also survived. A second strike completely destroyed the compound, killing dozens of relatives, he says. A video shot by surviving family members and provided to CNN shows the numerous bodies – wrapped in white burial shrouds – being placed into a mass grave. “My mother-in-law said her sons tried to evacuate, but they had no time,” Hamouda said, adding that his family was not involved in militant activity and that they “had nothing to do with anything at all.” Abu Shaban, a Boca Raton real estate developer, said the family were only civilians, and counted numerous medical professionals among them. Of Manal’s four brothers – Saed, Omar, Ameed and Khorsheed – three were eye doctors; the other was an ENT doctor. Hamouda says they operated Gaza’s largest network of family-owned eye clinics. “We have no Hamas members [in our family]. They’re just ordinary people: doctors and grandmothers and grandfathers and uncles and aunts and children,” Abu Shaban said. “I mean, if you want to exterminate Hamas then you should go to the source.” Pleading for a ceasefire The Maple Grove community has since rallied around the Hamouda family, showering them with love and support. Community members visited the nearby Brooklyn Park Islamic Center last week to pray for the family. A staff member from Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s Minnesota office even called to offer condolences and extend an offer of assistance, Hamouda says. But all Hamouda and Abu Shaban want is for the killing to stop. “We’ve never seen in this day and age where the whole world is watching innocent people just being torn apart. Families, whole families, just wiped off the map,” Abu Shaban said. “I want everybody to know that the people of Gaza are just like them, they hurt, they bleed, they have families, they have feelings.” Photos and videos of the conflict flooding social media are too much to bear, he says. Activists, human rights groups and international officials have all called for a ceasefire, but the war rages on, and has witnessed a new phase of dangerous ground operations. Until the killing stops, Abu Shaban says his family still reels: “I’m still in this nightmare. I haven’t woken up yet.” CNN’s Yahya Abou-Ghazala, Ivana Kottasova, Ben Wedeman, Akanksha Sharma and Tamar Michaelis contributed to this report.
