Airwars Assessment
On 4 December, 2024, at approximately 03:30 a.m., an alleged Israeli airstrike from a helicopter hit the Abu Hamisa School, a UNRWA-affiliated facility in Al-Bureij Refugee Camp, in central Gaza. The school served as a shelter for displaced people. The bombing resulted in the deaths of Dr. Muhammad Adnan Suleiman Abu al-Auf, a 34-year-old medical professional, and 24-year-old Mustafa Kamal al-Jadi. At least 15 tents within the school grounds were set on fire, causing damage and multiple injuries.
According to Safa News, Civil defense teams recovered a body and transported the injured to nearby medical facilities. Wafa News shared images that show civilians inspecting the tents of the displaced at Abu Hamisa School. Many children can be seen in the photos. Additionally, social media accounts like Falsten, Magda Mahfouz, and Om Ahmad Ali, shared footage of a fire amongst the tents.
Dr. Abu al-Auf, a supervisor at the Turkish Friendship Hospital, was remembered for his dedication to providing medical care in Gaza. Mustafa Al-Jadi’s death was widely mourned by the local community. Multiple photographs shared of Al-Auf showed him in a pinkish blazer and a white shirt.
Source Oum Yakob Nesma reported that Mustafa al-Jadi “succumbed to his wounds,” implying that he was injured, though not immediately killed, in the initial strike. Two photographs shared of Al-Jadi show him in casual clothing: in one, he wears a leather jacket and in another, a sports zip-up.
Where possible, the names of the victims have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released a number of lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, Mustafa’s name was matched to the eighth “Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza”, which was released on March 24, 2025.
All sources attributed the airstrike to the Israeli military.
