Airwars assessment
At least 30 civilians were likely killed and at least 11 others were wounded in an alleged Israeli airstrike on residential buildings on Hamid Street of the al-Shati refugee camp, near the Ashkelon Mosque in the Gaza Governorate, on the afternoon of Friday 27th October 2023.
Shehab Agency was the first to report the incident at 14:41, reporting about “martyrs” and injured.
Many sources indicated that numerous people had been killed in the airstrike. Several, including the late Gazan journalist Adel Zourob, specifically placed the number of civilians killed at “at least 30”.
Meanwhile, sources including Adel Zourob placed the number of injured at “dozens”.
Among those killed was 59-year-old man Yasser Muhammad Salem Abu Mathkur (Abu Muhammad). His death was announced on Facebook by his nephew Husam Mahmoud and his sister Umm Mohammad, who both mourned his loss. They shared an image of the smiling middle aged man with a grey hair and a grey beard dressed in a white T-shirt and a light-blue shirt.
Ahmad Assaf wrote on Facebook that at least five of those killed and 11 of those wounded were transported to al-Shifa hospital.
The Palestinian Press Agency (SAFA) reported that the alleged Israeli airstrike “destroyed a number of citizens’ homes over the heads of their residents”, and whilst some of those killed and wounded had been recovered, others remained trapped beneath the rubble.
According to the al-Shati camp Facebook page, the strike hit the homes of the al-Quqa, Abu Mathkur, Abu Hani, Sheikh Mahfut, Madi, and Abdel Samad families.
A number of videos and images were posted on social media depicting the aftermath of the strike. Mohamed al-Jobairi posted a video on Facebook showing a large column of black smoke rising from Hamid street, although the scene of the strike itself is obscured by buildings. Meanwhile, a video posted on the al-Shati Camp Facebook page, also shared by multiple other sources, including Qatari News Agency al-Jazeera, showed the aftermath of the strike. The video depicted a large area of completely destroyed buildings among which tens of people, including rescue workers, search the rubble for those trapped or buried beneath.
Another widely circulated image showed the grey square covered with dust and rubble and surrounded by destroyed buildings, with people searching the rubble, from above. Jazan Embroidery accompanied this image with the strong words: “Oh Lord, forgive me, what is this… Beach Camp, Hamid Street 💔😔 Oh God, what do we have left? No buildings, no streets, no people, no anything.”
Mahmoud Miqdad posted a further video from the scene on Twitter/X in which an injured civilian was lifted onto a stretcher. He added that at least five buildings were destroyed by the airstrike.
Ahmed Abo Shaqfa also posted a video from the scene on Facebook, showing multiple severely damaged buildings along Hamid Street.
The name of the identified victim was matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on July 24, 2024.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
