Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: January 6, 2026

On Tuesday, August 8, 2025, at least six civilians were killed and a number of civilians were injured during an alleged Israeli strike near Kosefim, an Israeli kibbutz, east of Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip while guarding humanitarian aid.

The incident occurred after several states had decided to conduct airdrops of humanitarian aid in August 2025, as the humanitarian situation had severely deteriorated and received increasing international media attention.

Based on numerous posts including a list of casualties by private social media users, including family and neighbours of the deceased, as well as reports from local media, researchers were able to identify five out of six casualties. Accordingly, four members of the Bashir family were reportedly killed during the incident, identified as Saeed Rami Sabry Bashir (21), his brother Jawad Rami Sabry Bashir (18), Nael Mounir Abdel Hadi Bashir (28) and Nidal Tahseen Mahmoud Bashir (30). The list further included Fadi Jamal Musa Dawas (41) and an unidentified member of the Abu Nasser family.

Many members of the Bashir family, including Saeed Abu Al-Amir, Reem Sabry and Faten Mahmoud took to Facebook to express their grief over the loss of their nephews and cousins, as well as their friend Fadi Jamal Musa Dawas. Haitham Bashir further described the honorable work his family members had carried out by protecting goods and ensuring their safe delivery of humanitarian aid to warehouses, noting that they had played a major role in the decline in prices. He also shared his anger over the loss of such important lives. Similarily, Hesham Bashir expressed his disbelief that such honorable people, who never let down the hungry, could be killed: “Their only crime was seeking to provide for the lives of others. They chose to stand with the hungry, not as spectators. They carried the concerns of the people, not as weapons against them.”

The social media posts were often accompanied by private pictures of the casualties. Fadi Jamal Musa Dawas is shown seated outdoors wearing a black athletic jacket with red, white, and gray stripes. He has a beard, closely cropped hair, and looks directly at the camera with a neutral expression. Nidal Tahseen Mahmoud Bashir appears indoors in a white button-up shirt, clean-shaven with short dark hair, photographed from the waist up while facing the camera. Saeed Rami Sabry Bashir, a young man, is wearing a black t-shirt indoors, holding a phone in one hand and looking at the camera appearing to have taken a selfie in a mirror. Jawad Rami Sabry Bashir, another young man, was photographed outdoors in a red top, with a street and barrier visible in the background. Nael Mounir Abdel Hadi Bashir is shown indoors wearing a dark jacket over lighter clothing, with styled hair and a trimmed beard, and holding a large rifle while facing the camera. Another photograph pictures him standing beside a grey car, wearing a red long-sleeved shirt and grey jeans. He has folded arms, and is smiling while looking to the side.

Saeed Rami Sabry Bashir, Jawad Rami Sabry Bashir, Nael Mounir Abdel Hadi Bashir, Nidal Tahseen Mahmoud Bashir, and Fadi Jamal Musa Dawas names, ages and portraits have been found by cross-checking names against lists of fatalities shared online by Genocide in Gaza, which has a list of “martyrs” of Israeli forces.

According to some sources, the incident also resulted in injuries. However, neither the number of those affected nor the identities of the casualties could be established.

The incident was covered by local journalists, including Abu Joud and Bilal Qandil, and media outlets, including the Palestinian Press Agency (Safa News Agency), MSDR News or Al-Yawm News. The incident was further shared by private social media users and by multiple local community groups on X/Twitter and Facebook, which are covering incidents in and news in their respective areas, such as X/Twitter user Qadeyah1 or Facebook users Sector Monitor or Al-Bureji Now.

All available sources described the incident as an airstrike, bombardment, or shelling.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all attributed the airstrike to the Israeli military.
