On November 7, 2023, Mustafa Fouad Ahmed Abdel Moneim, a young doctor at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, was reported dead by his family and colleagues. Though the specific circumstances of his death have not been reported, the inclusion of his name in lists of victims killed by the Israeli military – a list of named victims from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza and a list of healthcare workers by Healthcare Workers Watch – suggests that his death was allegedly caused by the Israeli military.
Mustafa’s passing was mourned by his colleagues, friends, and family. In a post by Eid Sabbath in a Facebook group for staff at the Kamal Adwan Hospital, colleagues offered their deepest condolences to his wife, who had served as a nurse at the same hospital. A friend, Mohammed Jihad al-Harazin, called him “a man of good character and gentle morals” who had done “nothing but good” in his life.
The strongest outpouring of grief was expressed by his wife. In a picture of the family, Mustafa was seen in a beige and white striped collared shirt, with his then one-year-old son perched in his arms, and his wife in a teal flower-print dress and white hijab. The picture was brightly lit and the child and parents looked cheerful and happy. The picture, first posted on April 21, 2023 by his wife, Huda Al-Atal, had been lovingly captioned: “you are my pride”, and “your presence is a blessing”. This was a picture from a happier time for the family, which Huda would in a later post (published following her husband’s death) refer to as “a good year, filled with passion and love, until October 7th turned it upside down”.
Much of the family’s joy appeared to have stemmed from the strength of Mustafa and Huda’s marriage, with Huda writing extensively about Mustafa and her bereavement in the months after his death. On November 25, 2023, Huda posted a picture of Mustafa – clean-shaven and in a black pullover, presumably from his younger days – with a caption calling for Allah to have mercy on Mustafa and grant the family strength in his absence. On February 27, 2024, accompanied with another picture of Mustafa – sporting a black tee and buzz cut – she referred to Mustafa as a “soul that [could not] be replaced and never come again”, describing how even in the months following his death he “stayed living with [her] at every moment [through her] memories, pictures, and words”.
On the anniversary of his death, Huda made one final post expressing the enduring rawness of her grief at Mustafa’s passing – how she “still [imagined] that [his] death was just a dream”, and how “the same pain […] in [her] heart at the time of [his] martyring” continued to pain her.
Mustafa was reported as being 32 years old at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Huda and his son, an infant at the time of his death.
Though none of the posts explicitly identified the belligerent responsible for his death, his inclusion in lists by the Palestinian Health Ministry and Healthcare Workers Watch of victims killed by the Israeli military indicate that his death could be attributed to the Israeli military but has been graded as a single source claim.
