Airwars assessment
An alleged Israeli drone strike and/or artillery strike during the morning of Thursday, October 10, 2024, on Al-Saftawi Street near the Nuwaija warehouses and Al-Saroukh junction north-west of Gaza City resulted in two civilian deaths, among them a judge, and at least fifteen others were reported injured.
The deceased were identified as Mohammed al-Taher Shehada and Mohammed Yahia Abo Seif. The injured were reportedly transported to Sheikh Radwan Clinic.
The incident was first reported at approximately 10:52 am EEST by @shaabradio on Twitter/X: “Martyrs and a number of wounded after a reconnaissance missile targeted a group of citizens near the missile intersection on Al-Saftawi Street, northwest of Gaza City.”
Umm Sami Al Masri provided additional details on Facebook: “#Urgent A martyr and at least 15 injuries arrived at Sheikh Radwan Clinic as a result of the [Israeli] firing artillery shells at citizens at the beginning of Al-Saftawi Street near the missile intersection north of Gaza City.” Safa News and other social media users corroborated this information.
Multiple sources identified the deceased Mohammed al-Taher Shehada as a local “sharia” (Islamic) judge. Eyad Abo Harbeed reported on Facebook: “Judge Mohammed al-Taher Shehada was martyred and another was injured as a result of their targeting with an [Israeli] gun near the Nuwaija warehouses on al-Saftawi Street, northwest of Gaza City.” Falstin Hora shared an image of Judge Shehada, showing a man smiling above a crowd waving green flags (potentially a Hamas political party rally), while Seif al-Bahri also posted photos of the deceased.
Waseem Al Lulu, a colleague of Judge Mohammed al-Taher Shehada, shared his condolences on Facebook, “May God have mercy on you, dear brother and colleague, the martyred judge Mohammed al-Taher Shehada.” Abo Hamza Barkat also shared a message on Facebook,” The martyrdom of the beloved Sharia judge Mohammed al-Taher Shehada a short while ago. We ask God to accept him among the martyrs,” and included a picture of the judge.
Similarly, Fadi Naem Abo Fareed shared a message for their friend Mohammed Yahia Abo Seif: “Every day I lose someone dear. My dear friend Mohammed Yahia Abo Seif. Martyr Mohammed Yahia Abo Seif. May God reward you, the honourable Abu Saif family. May God reward you […].”
Relatives of Mohammed Yahia Abo Seif also shared his pictures and their prayers for him online, Foad Abo Seif shared “A moon of Palestine, today we bid farewell to the martyr Mohammed Yahia Abo Seif, my cousin. To God we belong and to Him we shall return.”
The sources were conflicting on the nature of the attack. Some claimed that it was a reconnaissance missile while others reported that citizens were attacked with artillery shells, and some sources wrote that it was an airstrike.
Where sources identified belligerents, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
The incident occured in the morning.
