Airwars assessment

At least four civilians, including two children, 13-year-old Mahmoud Ibrahim Mahmoud Dababsh and nine or 11-year-old Anas Ahmed Abdul Rahman al-Mashharawi, were reportedly killed by an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Salah al-Din School on 14 November, 2024. In addition, “many others” were injured, though the details about these casualties were not found among local sources.

Facebook user Youcef Benzair shared a photograph of Anas, showing a young boy in a green sweater. Anas’ aunt, Um Odai Altourk, asked that “God have mercy on him” and shared condolences for her sister, Anas’ mother. Cousin Mahmoud Al Mashahrawi Abo Fadi shared similar sentiments, sending his “sincere condolences and sympathy to [his] cousin”, Anas’ father. Anas’ uncle, Em Jamal Jamal, shared his wishes for Anas: “You departed, God willing (to the gardens of paradise) where roses do not wither, where the birds of paradise sing to you the tune of eternity, and butterflies of beautiful colors dance around you, and you are now with humanity with those who preceded you to paradise.”

Facebook user Mo’men Abo Ouda specified that the four killed were children, and grieved that “this news reflects the deterioration of the humanitarian and security situation in conflict-affected areas.” As the school was housing displaced people at the time of the strike, Ouda lamented the lack of security “when educational facilities or places that are supposed to provide safety for the displaced are themselves exposed to attacks”.

A graphic video shared by Facebook user Mis Cinurina showed a man shouting in distress, alongside a video showing deceased bodies of two individuals, a young child and a man, identified as victims of the bombing of Salah al-Din School .

A video shared on Twitter/X by Al Jazeera Mubasher showed the destruction caused by the strike, including a significant section of the school which had caught alight and was releasing considerable plumes of smoke. A video shared by WAFA showed workers attempting to douse the flames.

Multiple sources, including @ajmubasher, reported “injuries” from the strike while @Dr_Muneer1 specified that “many” were wounded, which has therefore been quantified as 5-10.

The ages of both victims have been found by cross-checking names against lists of fatalities shared online by Shireen Monitor, an organisation which has a list of “Martyrs of Palestine” from 2023 onward.

A video of a munition found at the location of this incident published by @qudsn has been identified by munitions experts at the Open Source Munitions Portal, a joint project between Airwars and Armament Research Services, and can be viewed here (OSMP1008).

Where sources identified a belligerent, all pointed to the Israeli military.

The incident occured in the afternoon.
