Airwars Assessment
The morning of Monday July 15th 2024, at least two civilians were killed and a number of others were injured by alleged Israeli bombings in the Al-Shujaiya neighborhood in Gaza. The names of the three confirmed killed are Muhammad Aoun Al-Akshiya, and Muhammad Ashraf Al-Arqan. A third individual, Fadi Iyad Abu Sharbi, was also killed and has been recorded as a militant.
At 11:00, a Safa correspondent reported at least three Palestinians killed alongside a resulting “number of injuries” from an alleged Israeli military bombing of a group of citizens in the east of Gaza City. Aljazeera confirmed the numbers and location of the alleged shelling on Al-Mansoura Street near the Hassan building, which killed three people. Various other independent and news sources confirmed this throughout the day: “At least three citizens were killed and a number of others injured as a result” from the reported Israeli bombardment (Hani Alshaer on Facebook).
Friends and family took to social media to mourn their deaths; Mahmoud Essa confirmed the death of his cousin, Muhammad Aoun Al-Akshiya, his “comrade” Fadi Iyad Abu Sharbi, and his “good friend” Muhammad Ashraf Al-Arqan on Facebook later on the same day, along with an image of their grave sites, which appear to have been made of cardboard due to the shortage of resources.
When Airwars first published this incident on September 28, 2024, no open sources were found to suggest thatFadi Iyad Abu Sharbi was a militant. As such, Fadi Iyad Abu Sharbi was recorded as a civilian. This was in line with Airwars’ methodology which is employed across all conflicts we document, and informed by international standards regarding the ‘presumption of civilian status‘. Specifically, as outlined by the International Committee of the Red Cross, civilian status is assumed until evidence is identified to the contrary.
On July 5, 2026, a Telegram account affiliated with Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ)’s armed wing, published a tribute to Fadi Iyad Abu Sharbi, identifying him as a fighter. As such, Airwars updated Fadi Iyad Abu Sharbi’s status from civilian to militant, and changed the minimum number of civilians reportedly killed in this incident from three to two.
Nabil Al-Sadoudi also posted a memorial for his friend Muhammad Aoun Al-Akshiya, along with an image of himself with Muhammad. A post from Moein Al-Dabba included images of the three men before and after they were killed.
An image posted by Josat 24 News shows at least one man being treated for his injuries by a team of doctors.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
