Airwars assessment
On Monday, 29th January 2024, at approximately 1:00 pm, a number of civilians, including a civilian man, Ahmar Mahmoud Qaq, were killed and a number of others were injured as a result of an alleged airstrike by the Israeli military and/or the Syrian regime forces on a farm between the towns of Aqraba and Zainabiya in the vicinity of the city of Sayyida Zeinab in the southern Damascus countryside of Syria. The airstrike also caused casualties among militants, notably a man named Hasan Youssef Ghawi who was a member of Syrian regime forces, and other material damage, including the killing of the livestock.
Syrian state-run agency SANA reported that “a number of citizens were martyred and injured” as a result of an alleged Israeli aggression in several points south of Damascus. According to Protoplasm, several Iranian advisors were also killed in the strike.
Twitter/X user @SAMSyria0 shared an image of the late Ahmar Mahmoud Qaq – a man in his 30s. According to the inscription, he was from Kafriya town in Misr Al-Masrin district in the Idlib region. Another picture of Ahmar Mahmoud was shared by the Tigris Facebook account where he was seen wearing a black-white striped T-shirt and jeans.
Facebook user Al-Awda Sports’ team shared pictures related to the event on the platform. One of the pictures showed a rural site with a group of houses in the second half of the picture; a big white and gray cloud of smoke was coming up from the inhabited site. Another picture showed three men standing in front of a tractor in a rural area; in front of them, there was a cow lying on the ground, seemingly dead.
Another picture shows a semi-urban site with buildings on the horizon; a cloud of smoke was coming out of the building complexes. The last picture showed four men standing in front of a dead cow, lying on the ground. In the background, one could see a gray brick wall, with one of its sections completely destroyed and others damaged. One man was standing on the ruins of the destroyed section; while standing the man was as high as half of the wall.
Facebook user Houran Plus shared on the social media platforms some visual imagery related to the event. A video showed a gray cloud of smoke emerging from a residential area and a series of black objects (around 10) falling in the direction of the cloud without producing any sound. The rest of the pictures shared seemingly depicted the same area and the same cloud from different angles.
Facebook user Our Village is Kafarish posted on Facebook pictures related to the incident. The pictures showed the remains of destroyed buildings with broken parts of cement piled onto each other. The only things still standing were the broken pillars of the building.
Where the sources identified the belligerent, all the sources linked the attack to the Israeli military, with the exception of the two sources that held Syrian regime forces accountable. Houran Plus linked the attack to the Syrian regime while Facebook user Paolo Rossi alleged that the Syrian air defenses intercepted a number of the missiles allegedly launched by the Israeli military, and three missiles fell on the farms located south of Damascus.
The incident occured at approximately 1:00 pm local time.
