Airwars assessment

At approximately 9:40 am on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, an airstrike allegedly conducted by the Israeli military killed at least one civilian man and injured at least one other civilian in a residential building in the Kafar Sousa neighborhood in Damascus in Syria.

Al-Sharq News – Syria reported that the Ministry of Defense of the Syrian regime government confirmed the deaths of two civilians and injuries of another. However, the update from Twitter user @Mohab_Nasser2 suggested that three civilians were killed and a number were injured, although the exact number of injured remains unclear.

A civilian victim named Talal Ibrahim Al-Bayyadh (Abu Fadi) was killed in the attack. He was a middle-aged man with a brown beard, blue eyes and is pictured wearing a black beanie and black jacket in a photo posted by multiple sources. Another photo posted by Facebook user “Daria between past and present” depicted him with blue eyes, a bald head, and smiling in a navy blue shirt and a gray jacket.

A post from Ayman Abdel Nour stated that “The targets are 3 people, including a senior Iranian figure” in reference to the strikes on Kafar Sousa.

Ali Hashem Assaf was identified as another person killed in the strikes. The Facebook account “Qalamoun Pulse” alleged that the late Ali Hashem was “a criminal” and he was pictured wearing military camouflage in a photo. Given that Ali Hashem Assad was pictured in military clothes but without any additional evidence of militant status, Airwars was counted him as having a contested civilian status.

Another victim who was killed in the attack identified by the Facebook user Kalamon was the military engineer Youssef Hassan Younis. He was a slender young man pictured in military camouflage, and he can be seen holding a weapon. Although he is described as being an engineer, because he has been pictured with a weapon, he has been counted as a militant until further information comes to light.

According to the Twitter/X account @aabnour, eight Israeli missiles hit the Orfali building in Kafr Sousa, causing significant damage to the building, neighboring buildings, and buses and vans of Al-Bawader School.

Several photos and videos shared by SANA news and other sources captured the damage to the Orfali residency, a building in white and beige colors with at least ten stories, and balconies with a curved design. The overall structure was not destroyed, but some apartments sustained visible damage, and traces of the attack were evident on the walls. The material damage spread to nearby vehicles, particularly to buses and vans belonging to the Al-Bawader kindergarten, and to civilian cars. Some building units had broken windows and some others had significant dents from debris.

The sources indicated the Israeli military was responsible for the attack. According to the Syrian Ministry of Defense, the missiles were launched from the direction of the Syrian Golan.

The incident occured at 09:40:00 local time.

The victims were named as:

Ali Hashem Assaf هاشم عساف
