Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: August 27, 2025

At around 1.45 am on Friday, March 29, 2024, up to 33 people whose civilian status is contested were killed and over 100 were reportedly injured in more than 15 airstrikes allegedly perpetrated by the Israeli military on the sites and warehouses in Al-Safira, Kafr Joum, Jibreen, the vicinity of Aleppo Airport, and several other places in the region of Aleppo, Syria.

It is not clear at the time of writing how many of the victims were civilians, as reports claimed different information. State-run news agency SANA, referring to a military source, reported that “a number of civilian and military personnel” were killed and injured as a result of an Israeli airstrike.

According to Al-Jazeera Arabic on its Twitter/X account referring to SANA, “civilians and military were killed and injured by Israeli airstrikes north of the country.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights wrote that the incident killed to 52 people, all part of “regime forces, Lebanese Hezbollah and pro-Iranian militias.” In another diverging report, Facebook user Qutaiba Yassin posted that 38 people were killed, “including five Hezbollah members.” He also shared three videos showing the moment the strikes hit their targets where large clouds of smoke are visible.

Several sources, including Facebook user “Syria Lovers”, claimed that the attack killed more than 33 people, “both civilian and military,” and injured more than 100 others, calling the number of victims “unprecedented for a long time.”

Some of the names of casualties, “both civilians and military” were reported by several sources including “Syria lovers”.

Airwars researchers were not able to identify who was civilian, and who was a militant in this list including 33 names, therefore all of them are considered victims with a contested civilian status until further information comes to light. The list included the following names: Adham Kanaan, Ali Al-Nawras, Barhoum Rizk, Nassif Mohsen, Mohamed Sattouf, Raed Al-Zaydan, Shaaban Khartoum, Zaher Al-Ali, Haider Bey, Khaidar Asmar, Mustafa Derbas, Maher Yaqout, Nasr Sawas, Izzu Al-Saleh, Malik Maarati, Anas Zahra, Yaman Al-Saleh, Hamza Al-Najjar, Tahseen Al-Ali, Arwa Jabis, Adham Nahhas, Youssef Khader, Ahmed Sardab, Hossam Tahseen, Yacoub Qatari, Jaafar Hassan, Dergham Saleh, Ghassan Khadra, Zaid Nasser, Imad Shardak, Aziz Najjar, Khaled Nasih, and Badee Dabaan.

Twitter/X user @SAMSyria0 shared on the social media platform the names of militants who were killed as a result of the attack. Throughout several posts, the names of the militants killed were the following: Lieutenant Sharaf Hassan Muhammad Hassan of the Syrian Arab Army, from the western village of Al-Ghor, Homs Governorate; Lieutenant Sharaf Haider Merhej Al-Ali, from the Syrian Arab Army, from the village of Umm Al-Amad, Homs Governorate; Lieutenant Sharaf Rakan Mazen Qasrawi from the Syrian Arab Army, from the city of Homs, Bab al-Sabaa neighbourhood; First Lieutenant Sharaf Mahdi Adel Tutti, First Lieutenant Sharaf Hassan Muhammad Zuaiter, and First Lieutenant Sharaf Haider Ali Asad, all three from the town of Rabwah, Homs Governorate.

According to Twitter/X user @Omar_madaniah, three mercenaries from the Lebanese Al-Lat party were also killed, namely Ali Muhammad Bakkah, Mustafa Ali Nassif, Ali Muhammad Al-Haf, and Ibrahim Anis Al-Zein.

A Twitter/X post by user @AlHadath claimed that a Hezbollah leader named Ahmed Sheimi was also killed in the attack along with six other Hezbollah members as evidenced by Twitter/X post by @ivarmm who shared a photo collage of the six killed Hezbollah soldiers.

Multiple sources shared images showing the destruction resulting from the attack, including piles of rubble and a burnt car.

Where sources identified the belligerent, most sources attributed the strikes to the Israeli military.
