Up to two civilians, children, were killed and between 10 and 12 others, including two women and two children, were injured by alleged Israeli or Palestinian strikes on Al-Sahaba neighborhood in Gaza City on May 22, 2023.

Al Mezan reported that at around 15:45, a missile struck the home of Jawdat Fathi Alyan (48 years old) in the Al-Sahaba neighborhood in Gaza City, killing two children, Layan Bilal Muhammad Abdullah Madoukh (8 years old), and Yazan Jawdat Fathi Elayan (16 years old). Twelve other civilians, including two children and two women, were injured and a medical sources described the injured of two of the victims as between serious and moderate. @ShehabAgency added that the sister of one of those killed, Layan, was among the injured while @mer_jarm added that the father of Yazan was among the injured. Local sources reported Layan’s age as between 8 and 10 years old, and Yazan’s age as between 16 and 20 years old.

Middle East Eye quoted witnesses who said that “Me and my wife were sleeping when we heard the sound and the kids jumped up. We looked outside to see the building covered in smoke and fully destroyed. Everything was shaking…there was no prior warning for people to leave.” Midd East Eye added that Yazan’s home was completely destroyed.

According to Shehab News, quoting the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the body of the child that was killed and 10 injured people arrived at Al-Shifa Hospital.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible, with @ShehabAgency attributed the attack to Israeli while the IDF spokesman for the Arab media accused Islamic Jihad of launching the missiles that resulted in the civilian casualties. Amnesty International also reported this incident as a Palestinian misfire.
