Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: June 17, 2026

On March 18, 2026, one person was declared missing following an alleged Iranian airstrike on the Palau-flagged chemical tanker, Parimal, in the Gulf of Oman, 11NM off the coast of the UAE port of Khor Fakkan. Airwars has not yet been able to identify the name of the missing person.

In line with Airwars’ methodology regarding documenting harm at sea, seafarers who have been reported as missing have been included in the count of civilian fatalities recorded in this incident if there has been no further reporting of a rescue. This will be updated should additional information become available.

On March 19, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Centre reported that a “chemical/products tanker [was] hit by [an] unknown projectile and caught fire […] 11NM off the coast of Khor Fakkan.” According to the statement, the ship had a “crew of 16 [with] 15 rescued and 1 unaccounted for.”

As a result, one civilian has been recorded as killed and 15 rescued.

Lloyd’s List reported “this vessel to be the Palau-flagged, 12,887 dwt chemical tanker Parimal (IMO: 9308766), which is also on Lloyd’s List’s shadow fleet watchlist.” The shipping industry publication noted that “the vessel’s crew abandoned ship and were rescued by a Cook Islands-flagged tanker in the anchorage area. Parimal’s master remains unaccounted for, however.”

Trade Winds News reported that “observers strongly suspect Iran.” As such, ‘Iranian military’ has been recorded as the suspected belligerent in this incident. This will be updated should additional information become available.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A projectile hit a tanker off the coast of the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, causing a fire and leaving the captain missing, officials and maritime monitors said Thursday. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a naval monitor, said it received a report at 2300 GMT on Wednesday that "a vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile which has resulted in a fire on board" off the UAE port of Khor Fakkan in the Gulf of Oman.At a meeting of the International Maritime Organization in London later on Thursday, the delegate from Palau identified the vessel as a chemical tanker flagged to that country, the Parimal. He said 15 crew members were rescued by a Cook Islands-flagged tanker."However, the master is missing," he added. Marine intelligence journal Lloyd's List said the Parimal was part of the "shadow fleet" of unregulated vessels under international sanctions.Iranian forces have blocked the nearby Strait of Hormuz, a crucial trade route for oil and gas as part of the Middle East war.

Latest attack brings the total number of confirmed maritime aggression incidents to 21, says UKMTOIran fires a barrage of missiles in the latest Middle East war. Photo: IRNACasualtiesA ship is on fire after being hit by an unknown projectile near the United Arab Emirates deepwater port of Khor Fakkan. The master of the ship, which has yet to be formally identified, is missing, according to security firm Vanguard. It said the ship was ablaze and had been abandoned by its crew, 15 of whom were rescued by a nearby ship at the anchorage. The incident occurred about 11 nautical miles (20 km) east of the Khor Fakkan port, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).UKMTO has yet to identify the vessel or determine who attacked it, although observers strongly suspect Iran. This attack brings the total number of confirmed maritime incidents to 21 since Iran began targeting shipping in response to US President Donald Trump’s Operation Epic Fury.“Since the start of hostilities on 28 February, more than 20 maritime incidents involving commercial vessels and offshore infrastructure have been reported across the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman,” said the UKMTO.The maritime threat environment remains critical, UKMTO said, noting that the incidents involved a wide range of vessel types and flag states.“There is no consistent pattern of Western ownership linkage, suggesting that the current strike pattern reflects a campaign aimed at broad maritime disruption rather than selective vessel targeting,” UKMTO said.UKMTO noted that attacks may occur across a broad operating area of the Middle East Gulf. This includes ships in anchorages, engaging ship-to-ship operations and or making port approaches. The maritime watchdog urged commercial vessels operating within the critical threat area to maintain contact with it.This latest attack came hours after QatarEnergy confirmed that its Ras Laffan Industrial City had been attacked by missiles. This morning, Vanguard reported that a Qatar-flagged tug, named HALUL 69, had been hit by debris from a drone close to Ras Laffan. It said the bridge window had been damaged, but there had been no structural impact on the tug, and its crew were safe.TradeWinds reported on Wednesday that a Star Bulk Carriers ship holed in an Iranian attack off Dubai last week successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz. The 82,800-dwt Star Gwyneth (built 2006) was attacked while anchored in the Middle East Gulf on 11 March, leaving it with a two-metre hole in the No 1 cargo hold. None of the crew was hurt.(Copyright)

UKMTO reported that a vessel was hit by an unknown projectile at 2300 hrs on March 18 11 nautical miles east of Khor Fakkan, resulting in a fire on board. Iran has created a de facto ‘safe’ shipping corridor through its territorial waters in the Strait of Hormuz, offering vetted vessels passage in exchange for approval — and in at least one case, a reported $2m payment Read the full article here Lloyd’s List understands this vessel to be the Palau-flagged, 12,887 dwt chemical tanker Parimal (IMO: 9308766), which is also on Lloyd’s List’s shadow fleet* watchlist. The vessel’s crew abandoned ship and were rescued by a Cook Islands-flagged tanker in the anchorage area. Parimal’s master remains unaccounted for, however. Lloyd’s List senior risk and compliance analyst Bridget Diakun said Parimal “has a history of manipulating its AIS data while operating in the Middle East, suggesting it partakes in the lifting or transhipment of Iranian oil”. “The fact that shadow fleet vessels are being damaged as a result of the conflict is a reminder that no ships are truly ‘safe’ while operating in the region.”
