Airwars assessment

Up to four civilians have been killed and up to seven injured due to multiple alleged airstrikes by Russian and Assadi forces on the town of Binnish, Idlib province on August 3rd 2020.

Ariha post reported the names of three civilians from one family killed in the strike : Majed Ibn Jassim Al-Mohammed, Majid Ibn Musleh Al-Mohammed and Zaid Ibn Musleh al-Muhammad. The civilians were displaced from the village of Al-Burj, eastern Idlib countryside.

Halabtoday reported: “The Civil Defense said that 3 civilians were killed and 7 others were injured at dawn Monday as a result of the targeting of the Russian warplanes and regime artillery at the outskirts of the northern city of Bunche and the camps for the displaced, with five air strikes and 10 artillery shells.”

The majority of sources only mentioned that “others” were injured while Xber News reported that five civilians were injured. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights was the only source to mention that one civilian was killed. @abuhuzaifa_ posted an image showing a boy with bandages for his injuries and mentioned that his mother and father were killed in the incident.

Multiple sources reported the number of civilian deaths rose to four. The strikes hit tents housing displaced people resulting in the tents setting fire.

Xber news reported that following the five air strikes allegedly carried out by Russian warplanes: “the aerial bombardment on the area was followed by intense artillery and missile targeting by the Syrian regime forces stationed near the aforementioned area.” Xber news was the only source to mention militants involved in the airstrike, reporting that two militants were killed.

Multiple sources corroborated how the alleged Russian airstrikes were synchronized with alleged Syrian regime bombardement, SCD added detail: “In conjunction with the Russian air strikes, artillery bombardments of the regime forces targeted about 10 shells, the same place, with the aim of causing the largest possible number of casualties and preventing civil defense teams from reaching and saving civilians.”

Only one source added Iran as an alleged belligerent.

Multiple sources noted that this went against the truce of de-escalation between Turkey and Russia. Halabtoday reported that “It is noteworthy that the southern countryside of Idlib falls within the agreement of the fifth of March between Ankara and Moscow, which provides for a ceasefire, and the conduct of Turkish-Russian patrols from the Al-Tarnbah region east of Idlib to the northern countryside of Latakia.”

The incident occured around dawn.
