Airwars assessment
On the evening of Sunday, 8th October 2023, an alleged bombardment with missiles reportedly carrying incendiary ammunition by the Syrian regime and/or Russian military caused moderately serious injuries to three civilians: a father Salwan al-Yousef, his 13-year-old daughter Fatima Salwan Al-Yousef, and his infant son Mohamed Salwan Al-Yousef who was only three months old. The bombardment caused a fire in their home in the village of Abzimo located in the western countryside of Aleppo.
Syrian News Agency – SANA was among the first to report about the attack and three injured civilians. International and local sources, such as Aljazeera, Al-Muharrer Media Network, and the Media Editor Network, confirmed the information about the attack and the civilian casualties.
Twitter/X user Samira Sulamian (@samfreesyria777), Facebook users Abdullah Obied Mohamed, and News 24 Idlib shared the videos showing the moment of the alleged attack where sounds of explosions and the screaming of a woman can be heard and flashes from the explosions can be seen.
Syrian Civil Defense reported that their teams proceeded to extinguish the fire and inspect to confirm that there were no other casualties. SCD shared images of its staff members extinguishing the fire in the darkness.
Euphrate Pulse Facebook account posted an image of the remnants of the ammunition that was allegedly used during the attack. Facebook user Arab Abu Muhammad also shared a photo of the ammunition remnants and images of the residential building that had been destroyed and burnt taken by Macromedia Center.
Where sources identified the belligerent, they attributed the responsibility for the strike to the Syrian regime forces and/or the Russian military.
