Airwars assessment

In the early morning and in the afternoon of Tuesday, 17th October 2023, ten airstrikes allegedly perpetrated by Russian forces on the “Al-Qaswa” IDP camp and civilian homes in the outskirts of the town of Sheikh Youssef in the western countryside of Idlib, Syria, injured four civilians, including two women and two girls.

The Syrian Civil Defense reported that Russian airstrikes in the vicinity of Sheikh Yousef town injured two women and a girl. The Syrian Civil Defense also reported that another girl fainted near the town of Sheikh Youssef following the airstrikes and that residents and their children in Al-Qaswa camp “fled from the hell of missiles”, resulting in 30 families being displaced.

The damage caused by the airstrikes involved the burning of two tents and damage to civilians’ homes as a result of the pressure of the explosions caused by the air strikes. On Twitter/X, @SyriaCivilDefe posted images of the White Helmets volunteers extinguishing a tent fire caused by the air strikes and an ambulance, both captured in the early morning darkness. The SCD also posted a video showing the tents that were burnt and an injured woman lying on the ground treated by the SCD volunteer.

On Twitter/X, @SyriaCivilDefe posted a photo of Hussein, a nine-year-old boy who resided in Al-Qaswa camp following his family’s displacement from the southern countryside of Aleppo. Hussein was awoken by the sounds of the air strikes and the post commented: “His eyes tell of those moments of terror when his father told him [and he ran] away with his brothers after the raids hit a child and two women near their tent. He collects what remains of the belongings of his tent, which he watched from afar as missiles rained down on it and tore it apart.”

The post included additional photos of his tent destroyed and a school book in the rubble.

Sources available to Airwars did not report on deaths from the strikes and the identity of the civilians injured and displaced families remains unknown.

Sources reported up to 10 air strikes in the area that included Al-Qaswa camp, civilian homes near the town of Sheikh Yousef, as well as mountainous areas and stone quarries in the region west of Idlib. All sources claimed Russian forces perpetrated the airstrikes.

The incident occured around dawn.
