Airwars assessment
During the morning of Sunday, December 17, 2023, 15 civilians, including five children and one woman, were reportedly injured by the artillery shelling with contested responsibility allegedly perpetrated by Syrian regime forces and/or Russian military and/or Iranian military in the city of Idlib, in the region of Aleppo, Syria. The incident reportedly occurred in the residential neighbourhood of Wadi Al-Naseem, in the vicinity of the popular market on Al-Bazaar Street and of public and educational facilities (schools) that were also subject to the attack.
The incident and the injuries were first reported by the Syrian Civil Defence at 11:07 AM. The SCD wrote that its teams had treated the 15 injured and inspected the places impacted by the incident, attaching images showing broken glass and holes in the pavement in the aftermath of the strike.
A graphic video posted by the SCD showed a small girl dressed in a striped sweater and pink jacket crying and screaming in a car and later on a stretcher transporting her to the hospital. The video was captioned “The screams of a child who were chased by Assad regime shells and missiles, even in the arms of her father, who is now suffering from his wounds in the hospital.”
An image of this girl was also shared by Twitter/X account @mjdalnsr which also posted a video of children rushing and panicking in an educational facility close to the incident.
The incident also resulted in material damage, with several photos posted by many sources, including Saud Sayah Facebook account, showing buildings partly destroyed, rubble, artillery shells, broken windows and a burnt car. Reportedly, the market and schools were also bombed.
The Syrian Civil Defence identified the belligerent as the Syrian regime forces. However, the identity is contested by several sources, with a Twitter/X post by @abualisar18 and other sources holding the Iranian military responsible, while Northern News Network along with other sources also blamed the Russian military.
The incident occured in the morning.
