Between four to five civilians, including two children, were injured and one civilian was killed in an artillery shelling with contested responsibility allegedly perpetrated by the Syrian regime’s military forces and/or the Russian military and/or the Iranian military in the city of Sarmin, east of Idlib, specifically at the Grand Mosque and market neighborhood near a secondary school, shortly before 3:20 PM on Sunday, the 7th January 2024. In addition to the damages to the Mosque, a supermarket/shop was severely damaged by the attack.
The Syrian Civil Defense, also known as White Helmets, was the first to report the incident at 3:20 PM, informing about the attack on the Grand Mosque and market neighborhood near a secondary school and injuries resulting from it. Later the SCD released that five civilians, including two children, were injured as a result of this artillery shelling. In the evening, they treated the wounded. Photos shared by the SCD and Halab Today TV showed a large hole in the wall of the ancient mosque.
The lowest injury toll was shared in a Facebook post by “the news of Idlib and its countryside moment by moment” and was listed at four. Twitter/X user @zamanalws alleged that one civilian was killed, but this information was not corroborated by other sources.
Facebook account “Shaheed Alive” posted the names of four identified civilians who had been wounded in the strike, namely, Abdulatif Naqqash, Abdulaziz Yazji, Adnan Dabbash, and Ibrahim Hafiz Daqaq, wishing all of them a speedy recovery.
Photos shared by the Creative News Facebook account also showed an elderly and a young man standing in the rubble in front of a supermarket/grocery shop that had been hit by the artillery shells. The damage to the shop was also shown in a video shared by “The News of Idlib and its Countryside moment by moment”.
Twitter/X user Moayad Ismail (@moaidismaeil) shared the also showing the aftermath of the strikes where a burnt bike, a burnt facade of a shop, and rubble on the streets is visible. Other photographs and videos showed the sparks from the shelling and the smoke arising from them.
The perpetrators were listed by most sources, including Syrian Press Agency and Syrian Civil Defense, as the Syrian regime forces, but some sources, including Free Syria News and Twitter/X user @Ahmadmuaffaq, attributed the strike to the Russian and Iranian forces.
The incident occured at approximately 3:20 pm local time.
