Airwars assessment
On Tuesday evening, October 15th, 2024, an artillery shelling with contested responsibility allegedly carried out by the Syrian regime, and/or Russian and/or Iranian “militias” reportedly struck the town of Al-Atareb, in the Aleppo Governorate, Syria, killing a 23-year-old man, Muhammad Abdul Karim Ubaid, and a child, Ibtisam Joubra’il, and injuring at least six and up to eight civilians. Some sources claimed that the attack took the lives of three civilians, including two children.
The injuries were reported as three members of one family – Adnan Sadef, his son Sadef Adnan Sadef, and his daughter Lubna Adnan Sadef – as well as Walid Joubra’il, Amina Mohammad Amin, and Abdullah Mohammad al-Sa’id.
At 8:10 PM, @SyriaCivilDefe reported on Twitter/X the shelling as being carried out by “regime forces” and the presence of civilian casualties, followed by other two posts on the same platform that indicated the death of a 23-year-old (likely Muhammad Abdul Karim Ubaid) and the injuring of eight civilians, including two children, a young woman, and another woman. Three of the injured belonged to one family, and three to another one. The posts also showed pictures of a boy (probably Sadef Adnan Sadef) and two men being treated in a hospital.
Images of Muhammad Abdul Karim Ubaid, depicting the 23-year-old with a moustache and goatee, were shared by several Facebook accounts.
A Facebook post from the “Liberated Areas Administration” reported that a child was killed while Free Idlib News stated that two children were killed alongside Muhammad Abdul Karim Ubaid.
A list with the names of the victims and the injured was published by Facebook user Khalid Abo Ahmad Shallah, along with a video taken from a distance showing an explosion in a residential area at night, a picture of Muhammad Abdul Karim Ubaid before and after his death and the image of a head-injured child (probably Adnan Sadef’s daughter Lubna), as well as pictures of the damage to a doorway which is covered in blood.
User Alatareb Alhorra shared other images of the aftermath, showing shrapnel damage on the walls of what appears to be a civilian shop.
A post from Hadi Al Hindawi further reported that multiple injuries occurred in a traffic accident, which was caused by the panic induced from the shelling.
While most sources attributed the attack to the Syrian regime, some indicated Russian and Iranian “militias” as responsible for the attack.
The incident occured in the evening.
