Airwars assessment
In what local media described as “a massacre”, between six and 16 civilians died in alleged Russian or Syrian regime air and artillery strikes on Aleppo’s al-Ferdos neighbourhood. Up to 50 more people were reportedly wounded in the attack.
In a video taken by SafwanAhmad1, of a civilian casualty being dug from the rubble another airstrike hits suggested there were multiple raids on the area within the time frame.
The death counts varied. Thiqa News Agency reported that only four were killed, while most of the other sources reported that the number rose to around 14.
The Twitter account Hasan07136891 reported that there were “16 martyrs in the initial death toll, four of the same family, the majority of them children. they were killed by Russian warplanes”.
According to Ara News, the strikes hit a local market with three missiles “killing 14 civilians including women and children and wounding dozens more. Shops and properties were burnt and destroyed, and the civil defense searched for survivors under the rubble”. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights stated that at least four children were among the victims.
Syrian Press Center added that 51 people were wounded – and blamed regime warplanes.
The majority of sources attributed the event to Russia, though Syria Mubasher and the Syria Press Center blamed the regime. Human Rights Watch and Shaam News Network pointed to both Russia and the Assad regime as the culprits.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
