Airwars assessment
Five civilians, including at least two children, were killed and up to ten more were wounded in alleged Russian or Syrian regime airstrikes on the city of Ma’arat Al Numan on May 30th, 2019, according to local sources.
The Syrian Civil Defence (@SyriaCivilDefe) reported that “five martyrs elevated and 10 others were injured, trapped under rubble as a result of airstrikes targeting the neighbourhoods of Ma’arat Al Numan city this morning, civil defence teams are still searching for survivors under the rubble.”
@ajmurgent wrote that “four children and a woman were killed in raids by Russian airliners and Assad’s warplanes on Ma’arat Al Numan in Idlib countryside.” Okaz News also stated four children were among the victims.
Local Coordination Committee for Syria identified five victims of the attack, including two children, two women and one young man. Macro Media Center, however, reported the same names, stating four of them were children. The Syrian Human Rights Committee reported Raghad Qashit as being an adult woman, while the MMC stated she was a child. Abd Al Hadi Qashit was reported a child by MMC and the SHRC, but the LLCSy stated he was a young man.
Syria Noor reported that in addition to five fatalities, ten more civilians, mostly women and children, were injured in the strikes with four high-explosive missiles. Smart News Agency also stated that 10 others had been wounded in the strike.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that “at least five civilians, including two children (one male and one female) and two women, were killed as Syrian regime warplanes fired missiles on al Gharbi neighbourhood in Ma’arat Al Numan city, on May 30.” According to this source, most of the victims in the attack were “from the same family.”
Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Okaz News that the targeting of a residential area led to a building collapsing on its residents – adding that the majority of the civilians was still asleep when the strikes occured in the morning.
Okaz adds that “paramedics pulled a bloody teenager out of the rubble, who was killed on his bed by the building. Next to him, his brother was trapped under the rubble and was still alive.”
While most sources blamed the Syrian regime for the airstrikes, a few others, such as @ajmurgent and Step News Agency, blamed both the Syrian regime and Russia. @Omar_Madaniah reported only Russia as the responsible belligerent.
The incident occured in the morning.
