Airwars assessment
On Monday, January 1st, 2024, three civilian members of one family, including a pregnant mother alongside her infant daughter and her father-in-law, were killed and up to 13 civilians were injured due to an artillery strike reportedly perpetrated by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, a militia faction part of the Al-Fath Al-Mubin grouping affiliated with the Turkish military, on the residential homes located in the towns of Nubl and Al-Zahraa, northern Aleppo, Syria.
According to the sources, the attack was carried out from the town of Darat Azza in the western countryside of Aleppo with the use of “Grad” missiles. The sources stated that the attacks resulted in damage to a number of citizens’ homes, their property, and public property.
The victims were named Ruqaya Usama Husein Seifo, Hilal Mohammed Husein Seifo, and Sakna Ali Husein Seifo, all members of the same family. The Nubul and Zahra Facebook account posted a photo of each of them.
Ruqaya Usama Husein Seifo, a baby girl, with a light skin tone and blue eyes, blonde short hair, was wearing a sleeveless white shirt and a silver headband. Her mother, Sakna Ali Husein Seifo, was wearing a blue with white print hijab and blue jacket. She had a light skin tone, thin eyebrows, black eyes, and was reportedly pregnant. Sakna’s father-in-law and Rukaya’s grandfather, Hilal Mohammed Husein Seifo, was an elderly male with a light skin tone, no beard, and black eyes, wearing a gray shirt and white turban.
Initially, Al-Mayadeen reported that 10 civilians were injured, Madina FM – that 11, but the maximum reported number of wounded was 13, according to Click News. In addition, Nubul and Zahra’s network posted photos of buildings with destroyed ceilings and significant debris inside different rooms.
The sources identified the belligerents as the Turkish-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham militia and Turkish forces. According to Sham news, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham militants attacked these cities while Iranian militia was stationed there.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
