Airwars Assessment
On Thursday, October 3, 2024, at approximately 6:00 PM, a man was killed after an alleged Turkish drone targeted a vehicle traveling on the Qamishli-Amuda road near the village of Ghazalik, in the northeastern Syrian Al-Jazeera region. According to multiple sources, the strike involved two missiles: the first caused the vehicle to deviate off the road, and the second hit the stationary car directly, killing both occupants. A woman, identified as a PKK leader, was also killed, and two SDF members were reportedly wounded. Information regarding the man – including any identifying factors – was not made available. No source indicated any involvement in militant activity.
The woman killed in the drone strike, however, was identified as PKK leader Jinda Cudi. Syria TV News clarified that she was a Turkish citizen and PKK leader responsible for supervising military points for the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ). Facebook page for Hawar News described her as a leader within the YPJ.
The woman’s militant status was compounded by a picture shared by Hawar News. The image featured a composite design, with the foreground depicting the woman in military attire and the background showcasing a mountainous landscape. Cudi was dressed in camouflage clothing and wore a tactical vest loaded with gear. In her right hand, she appeared to be holding a small object, possibly a weapon or a tool. Superimposed above the mountains was a translucent, enlarged portrait of the same woman, showing her wearing a patterned scarf over her head. The text at the bottom read “FERMANDAR Jinda Cudi,” indicating her identity and possibly her military rank or title. Due to the repeated references to Cudi as a PKK member, along with the photograph of her in military uniform, she has been categorised as a militant.
Where the sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed responsibility for the attack to the Turkish military.
