Airwars Assessment
On Thursday, October 17, 2024, a man and a woman were killed and 27 civilians, including three children, were injured as a result of gunfire from alleged violent clashes between the factions of the jihadist group “Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham” (Levant Front) and the “Joint Force” consisting of “Al-Amshat” and “Al-Hamzat” fractions that comprise the Turkish-affiliated Syrian National Army in the Kafr Jannah village and surrounding areas in Afrin countryside, northern Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that a woman and a man were killed by random gunfire in the camps of Kafr Jannah village, following clashes between the Levant Front and the Joint Force in the area, and 27 civilians, including three children, were injured.
North Press corroborated this report: “Local sources told a North Press correspondent that 27 people, most of them women and children, were injured as a result of the armed clashes between “Al-Sham Front” and the “Joint Force” in the village of Kafr Jannah in the countryside of Afrin.”
Moreover, the attacks instilled fear among civilians, particularly women and children, leading to appeals for conflict resolution forces to intervene and halt the violence. Shelling near camps in the town of Kafr Jannah further intensified the situation, prompting residents to seek evacuation.
Along with civilians, four members of the Joint Force and two of the Northern Falcons Brigade were killed.
Where the sources identified the belligerent, sources attributed responsibility for the attack to different militias affiliated with the Turkish military and/or the jihadist group “Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham”. Therefore, Airwars has graded both Strike Status and Civilian Harm Status of the incident as Contested.
