On Sunday, November 24th, 2024, a civilian was killed and three children were injured by artillery shelling that allegedly originated from the Turkish military in the village of Halisa in the northern countryside of Aleppo, Syria. One of the children was then reported to have died in the hospital as a result of the injuries received in the incident, updating the toll to two killed and two injured.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that a 40-year-old civilian from Afrin died as a result of the shelling. The deceased was identified on Facebook by the Kurdish Centre for Human Rights to be Muhammad Arif Hajj Mahmoud, a resident of Jandaris in occupied Afrin. A video attached to the post showed severe damage to a civilian’s house. It is suggested that the house belonged to Muhammad. The video was widely shared on social media. It showed a wall and window that looked to be the kitchen, blown out into the street. The rest of the room is coated in dust, with shelves and furniture collapsed on the floor.
A post on Facebook from Hawar News (@ANHA) showed an image of two injured children and a man, presumably Muhammad. The individual’s face was blurred, but it appeared that they were lying on their back in a bed. Efrin News had reported that 13-year-old Russel Mohammed Khalaf had been injured and was in a critical condition. However, a later report on November 29th by ANF News stated that Russel had died due to the extent of her injuries, despite the best efforts of the hospitals in Aleppo. The post included the image of the deceased girl lying on a bed, with her face blurred.
On Facebook, Efrin news also reported that Murad Muhammad Hajj Mahmoud, 14 years old, and Hussein Mohammed Hassan, nine years old, were injured in the incident. Murad is likely to be the child of the deceased based on her middle names. The previously noted Facebook post from @ANHA included images of two children. One is shown to have blood on their forehead and face. The second has a large blood stain that originated around their neck and upper chest area.
ANHA, the Kurdish Centre for Human Rights, Facebook user Jawn Bardkhan, ANF News and Efrin News all attributed the strike to the Turkish military.
