On the evening of Sunday, December 22, 2024, a woman, Sawsan Khalaf (35), and her teenage daughter, Naseem Khalaf (12), were killed in an alleged Turkish artillery strike on their house located in the village of Jaada in the southern countryside of Kobani in northern Syria.

Hawar News Agency reported: “The village of Jaada in the southern countryside of the city of Kobani was subjected to shelling by the Turkish occupation, which led to the martyrdom of a woman and her daughter (12 years old) in the artillery shelling.” The outlet confirmed their identities through hospital records: “The martyrs are the mother, Sawsan Khalaf (35 years old), and her daughter, Naseem Khalaf (12 years old).”

Kobani.tv echoed the same details, stating that the artillery shelling “targeted the house where the two victims were living,” quoting a relative, Muhammad Ibrahim, who had been interviewed by Radio Arta. North Press Agency (NPA) cited a medical source, reporting that both victims had arrived at Al-Amal Hospital already deceased due to “severe injuries from shrapnel from a mortar shell.”

The Kobani Facebook page showed a video of the victims. The video began in a small, sterile room with white walls and tiled flooring, likely a hospital or medical facility. The first scene focused on a bed positioned beneath a window. Lying on it was the body of a woman, covered in a red and beige striped blanket. Her head and feet were partially visible, with the rest of her body wrapped in the blanket. The room was sparsely furnished, with a radiator under the window, a fan on the wall, and a table with a white cloth to the side.

After several seconds, the camera slowly panned to the adjacent bed, where a second victim lay. This individual was fully covered with a plain grey blanket. Only a portion of their hair was visible, revealing that the victim was a child. The two bodies had been placed side by side, on separate metal-framed beds with simple striped mattresses. A media watermark was visible at the center of the video.

NPA.news shared a picture of the house allegedly hit by the reported attack. The image showed a concrete building situated in a rural area. The structure was light grey in color, with a simple rectangular shape and a flat roof. It had an arched doorway and several small rectangular windows, some of which appeared dark or partially covered. Part of the building, particularly on the right side, showed visible signs of damage, including a large hole in the wall and debris scattered on the ground nearby.

When belligerents were identified, the sources consistently attributed responsibility for the attack to the Turkish military and its allied “factions.”
