Airwars Assessment

Last Updated: October 21, 2025

Two children were injured by alleged Turkish or Turkish-affiliated faction shelling of the village of Bir Hasso on January 11, 2025.

The Violations Documentation Centre (VDC) reported that two brothers, Jassim Ali Shawakh (12 years old) and Hani Ali Shawakh (16 years old), were injured when Turkish artillery shelling struck the home of Ali Hasnawi Shawakh in the village of Bir Hasso. ANF News added that the two brothers had varying injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment – the article included images of two boys, one laying face down on a medical bed and the other sitting up with an IV in his arm. North Press Agency later reported that the children had been transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the “al-Amal” Hospital in the city of Kobani, where they underwent surgery and were receiving treatment at the time of reporting.

According to Jassim and Hani’s father, who spoke to North Press Agency, their family “were displaced from their home in the village of “Qara Qozak” near the “Qara Qozak” bridge to the village of “Bir Hasso” about twenty days ago, due to the security situation and the continued Turkish bombing of the area.”

Hawar News interviewed the two injured boys while they were being treated in the hospital. Jassim is seen lying in a CT/MRI machine and says “My name is Jassim Ali Shawk, we were sitting at home and a rocket hit our house which caused our injuries.” The video then shows an injury to Jassim’s side. The second boy, Hani, is then interviewed and says “My name is Hani Ali, a rocket targeted our home suddenly and injuried us. Hani is seen lying on a red medical bed and the video shows injuries to his back and stomach. North Press Agency also published a video of both boys in the hospital attacked to IVs, and their father said “We were trapped in our home for forty days due to indiscriminate artillery shelling. Then we decided to move to a safer house at the end of the city. Two days later, the house was randomly shelled at 11:00 a.m. My 16-year-old son, Hani, and my 12-year-old son, Jassim, were injured in the abdomen. They were taken to Kobani Hospital, and I was with them. However, I am very worried about the rest of my children who are still in the house. We moved to this house with ten other families to escape the shelling. Currently, there are more than ten families in the same place.”

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the attack to the Turkish military and/or armed factions loyal to Turkey.
