Three people, including a child, were reported killed with at least nine injured, including a child and four women, after alleged Turkish artillery strikes on Umm Harmal village in the countryside of Abu Rasin (Zarkan), northwest of al-Hasakah, Syria, during the night on 28 January 2025. Those impacted were members of the same extended family.

Beginning at 2:30 a.m., the shelling killed 50-year-old Ibrahim Obaid al-Sayyad, 35-year-old Hussein Obaid al-Sayyad, and child Jamil Muhammad Daham al-Sayyad. The names of the injured varied between sources, with initial sources reporting them as Shahd Obaid al-Sayyad, Tarfah Amou al-Sayyad, Hind Daham al-Sulaymo (al-Sayyad), and Siham Daham al-Sayyad, and later sources naming eight out of nine injured: Tarfa Ramadan Abdullah, Suhaim Ibrahim Abdullah, Zainab Ibrahim Abdullah, Shahd Taha Abdullah, Raghad Taha Abdullah, Ahmed Taha Abdullah, Malak Muhammad Marai, and Fatima Mahmoud Abdullah. While it is likely that there was overlap between these names, it is not clear which individuals may be doubled. Most sources, notably, reported nine injured.

Hawar News shared a composite image of the two adult deceased: Ibrahim, standing directly to the camera, sports a shirt and plaid blazer, whilst Hussein is looking over his shoulder.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also reported on the incident, indicating that four women were seriously injured as a result of the attack. Roj News emphasized that most of the injured were women and children.

The wounded were transported to hospitals in Hasakah for treatment; many injuries were reported as serious. A photograph shared by ANF News shows a young girl with a bandaged face, hands, and leg, indicating that at least one of the injured was a child. The  SOHR also added the images of two injured women lying on hospital beds.

A resident of the village, quoted by NPA News, stated that the shelling was done “intensively” and that it “continued until [the following] morning.” Hawar News recorded a statement from the Internal Security Forces, which alleged that the “Turkish occupation bombing […] bombed the village of Umm Harmal with 15 heavy artillery shells.”

A photograph shared by NPA showed a room, heavily littered with debris, and a blurred form, likely that of a killed individual. In a video filmed by ANHA and shared by Roj News, the house can be seen with a huge hole ripped in its outside wall.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Turkish military.
