Airwars Assessment
On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., six civilians and four SDF fighters were killed in an alleged Turkish airstrike on al-Ruwaished desert south of the city of Shaddadi, in a border region between the districts of al-Hasakah and Deir Ezzor in northeastern Syria.
This incident was part of a broader military operation involving multiple strikes on the area, with most sources reporting 16 strikes and one source (Facebook user @Al Shiek Mountain) reporting 18 strikes. The strikes hit multiple locations in the al-Ruwaished area. The first strike hit a military facility belonging to the SDF, with @Al Shiek Mountain providing additional detail identifying it as a military academy, the al-Kharafi regiment, and an intelligence headquarters. This strike killed six civilian workers who lived in residential homes at or near the military compound, as well as four SDF fighters.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Turkish military. Nine sources reported a combined attack using Turkish warplanes and drones, while SOHR and @Al Shiek Mountain mention drones only, and Skynews and Shafaq News emphasised the involvement of warplanes.
All sources, except SOHR, appeared to cite SDF statements as their primary information source, with many directly quoting the SDF Media Center’s statement.
