Bari Region, Somalia – Puntland’s Darawiish forces have officially taken control of the Miiraale command base, the last known hideout of the ISIS-affiliated terror group in the Cal Miskaad Mountains of Bari region. At dawn today, the forces launched a coordinated assault on Miiraale from multiple ground directions, supported by aerial operations. The area had served as the primary operational base for the extremist group in northeastern Somalia. A brief statement issued by the Puntland Ministry of Security confirmed the operation’s success, declaring: “Allahu Akbar. Our forces have taken control of the Miiraale base — the final refuge of the fleeing ISIS militants in the valley. The last of their strategic wells and infrastructure have been seized. The third phase of the joint air and ground operation has ended in complete victory.” The fall of Miiraale marks a decisive blow to ISIS in Puntland and signals the near-total dismantling of the group’s presence in the region. It also represents the culmination of years of effort to eliminate the threat posed by the extremist group to Somali communities.

Facebook Twitter (X) Instagram Somali Magazine - People's Magazine In a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in northeastern Somalia, Puntland Defense Forces have captured the last known ISIS stronghold in the Miraale Valley of the Cal-Miskaad Mountains. The success marks a pivotal milestone in regional security operations and significantly weakens the militant group’s foothold in the area. The offensive began in the early morning hours as Puntland forces, supported by combat helicopters, launched a coordinated assault targeting key ISIS hideouts. After weeks of strategic planning and careful surveillance, the troops advanced on the militants entrenched along the Miraale stream, ultimately taking full control of the valley. The area, once considered a strong defensive position for ISIS due to its rugged terrain, has now been cleared of all enemy presence. Reports from the front lines indicate that several ISIS fighters were killed during the operation. Puntland troops also seized a large cache of military supplies, uniforms, and other essential gear used by the insurgents. Video footage shared online shows evidence of hastily abandoned encampments and destroyed bunkers as the militants attempted to flee during the final assault. For the past two months, ISIS remnants had retreated deeper into the Cal-Miskaad Mountains, relying on the harsh landscape to avoid detection and regroup. The successful capture of this final stronghold deals a devastating blow to the group’s local operations and ends its strategic use of the mountains as a sanctuary. Security experts view this development as a major success in Puntland’s broader counterterrorism campaign, which has gained momentum over recent months. With this victory, the region inches closer to eliminating violent extremist networks that have long destabilized communities and disrupted local governance. The operation’s aftermath will now turn to ensuring stability in the recaptured territory. Clearing unexploded ordnance, restoring basic infrastructure, and rebuilding trust with local residents will be essential next steps. Authorities are also expected to strengthen surveillance and intelligence operations to prevent any attempts at regrouping by extremist cells. This latest success reflects Puntland’s growing military capability and reinforces the importance of well-coordinated operations in securing long-term peace in the region. As the dust settles in the Miraale Valley, the hope is that this hard-won triumph will mark the beginning of a new chapter—one defined by resilience, security, and reconstruction.
