In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted an airstrike against ISIS-Somalia on June 1, 2025. The airstrike occurred 72 km south of Bassaso, Somalia. ISIS-Somalia has proven both its will and capability to attack U.S. forces.  AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s ability to plan and conduct attacks that threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad. Specific details about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security.

US warplanes carried out a heavy airstrike last night near the Miraale River in Bari region, where ISIS members had fled after Puntland forces completely took control of the river. Officers leading Puntland forces in the front lines said they heard a loud bang south of Miraale, where ISIS fighters are suspected of fleeing from their key bases and wells in the Miraale River. The Puntland Operation Calmiskaad Command confirmed the US airstrike in a brief statement, noting that the target was an ISIS convoy heading towards the Calmiskaad mountains. “Some of the terrorist convoys that fled from the Miraale River were bombed by the US-backed Puntland government, and were targeted as they were fleeing south of Miraale,” the Command’s press release said.
