Shortly before 11:46 AM on Wednesday, 8th May 2024, between two to three women, including a pregnant woman, were injured in an artillery bombardment with contested responsibility allegedly perpetrated by the Syrian Democratic Forces and/or the Syrian regime forces on the Land of Hope refugee camp in the Khalidiya area in the Afrin countryside, north of Aleppo, Syria.
The Syrian Civil Defence reported the serious injury of a pregnant woman. According to the SCD, the strike also caused a woman in the camp to faint and many other families to flee the camp to surrounding agricultural lands because of the state of panic and fear among civilians in the camp. A Facebook post by Mohammed Ali shared a photograph of several families from the camp seeking refuge in nearby ‘forests’ following the attack. A Facebook Post by Al Arabiya claimed, referring to its correspondent, that a second woman was also seriously injured in addition to the sole pregnant civilian claimed by other outlets, such as the SCD.
The Syrian Civil Defence (White Helmets) shared a photograph of a blurred and covered individual (likely the injured pregnant woman) being transported by a civilian ambulance to what appears to be a village or town hospital
Alaa Al Deeb Facebook account shared an image where a remnant of the missile can be seen and the photos showing the material damage to the camp.
While the perpetrators were not clearly identified, the direction of the attack came from an area controlled by the Syrian regime forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces. Facebook posts by users such as Mohammed Ali, SANA (Syrian News Agency), and Tigris Daily all agreed that the direction of the attack came from the regime and its allies. Therefore, Airwars has graded both the strike status and civilian harm status as contested.
