With hearts filled with sorrow and grief, we announce the martyrdom of our dear friend, Hassan Ali Badawi, a paramedic with the Lebanese Red Cross – Tebnine Center, who was martyred moments ago while performing his humanitarian duty of rescuing the wounded. Hassan was an example of sacrifice and courage. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand, and his generosity continued until his last breath. He was not just a passerby in this life, but a living presence among people, a heart that knew only giving, and a hand that extended only for good. May he be blessed with this great honor, and may he be blessed with martyrdom in the service of humanity. We ask God to have mercy on him and grant his family and loved ones patience and solace. Lebanese Red Cross: Paramedic Killed, Another Wounded in Israeli Drone Strike The Lebanese Red Cross announced in a statement that "at approximately 8:15 PM on Sunday, April 12, while carrying out a humanitarian mission at a location on the road to the town of Beit Yahoun in the Bint Jbeil district, Lebanese Red Cross teams were directly targeted by an Israeli drone. This resulted in the death of paramedic Hassan Badawi and minor injuries to another paramedic, who were both transported to Tebnine Governmental Hospital. Prior to the mission, the necessary arrangements had been made with UNIFIL for protection and safe passage." The statement added: "The Lebanese Red Cross is deeply concerned about the harm inflicted on its ambulance crews, especially since the ambulances and their crews were clearly marked with the protective Red Cross emblem on all sides, with the emblem illuminated. This is standard practice for all missions carried out by Lebanese Red Cross teams in the southern border areas. Coordination for these missions is maintained through the necessary communications with UNIFIL forces to ensure safe passage and protection, and the International Committee of the Red Cross is also informed." He concluded: "The Lebanese Red Cross strongly condemns the attacks on its crews as they carry out their humanitarian duty and adhere to fundamental principles, especially neutrality, impartiality, independence, and humanity. This targeting is a continuation of the clear and explicit violations of the rules of international humanitarian law in all its aspects."

The Ministry of Public Health's Emergency Health Operations Center issued a statement declaring that the Israeli enemy directly targeted a Lebanese Red Cross ambulance team in the town of Beit Yahoun, Bint Jbeil District, this evening, in yet another violation of international humanitarian law and norms. This attack resulted in the death of one paramedic and injuries to another. The Ministry extends its condolences to the Red Cross and all ambulance services operating in conflict zones in Lebanon, who make immense sacrifices in fulfillment of their humanitarian mission. The Ministry affirms that it will pursue international legal action to ensure accountability for these violations.

In tragic news, a Lebanese Red Cross ambulance from the Tebnine center was directly targeted moments ago as it was leaving on a humanitarian mission to evacuate injured people in Beit Yahoun. The attack resulted in the death of one paramedic and injuries to another.

Beirut/Geneva, 13 April – Lebanese Red Cross paramedic Hassan Badawi was killed and another paramedic was injured on Sunday evening, 12 April, while they were part of a Lebanese Red Cross ambulance team responding to an airstrike in the town of Beit Yahoun, Bint Jbeil District, southern Lebanon. Hassan had been a volunteer with the Lebanese Red Cross since 2012. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) strongly condemns this attack on an emergency medical team clearly marked with the Red Cross emblem. The IFRC extends its deepest condolences to Hassan’s family, loved ones, and colleagues at the Lebanese Red Cross, and wishes a full recovery to the injured paramedic. At the time of the attack, the ambulances and their crews were clearly marked with the Red Cross emblem, visible from all sides and illuminated on the vehicles, in accordance with international humanitarian law. As is standard practice for Lebanese Red Cross operations in conflict zones, these missions were reported through the established channels to notify the parties to the conflict of their routes. According to the Lebanese Red Cross, the mission was notified in advance through established channels, including the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), to ensure protection and a safe passage. Flak jackets and final goodbyes: Lebanon’s first responders under fire Before heading to strike sites in war-torn Lebanon, rescue workers and paramedics often say goodbye to one another – a ritual captured in widely shared videos reflecting the growing dangers faced by aid workers since hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel erupted on 2 March. Recent attacks killed two Lebanese Red Cross volunteers: Youssef Assaf, who died during a rescue operation on 9 March, and Hassan Badawi, killed in a drone strike on 12 April. According to the UN World Health Organization (WHO), there have been 169 confirmed attacks on healthcare workers and facilities in Lebanon, resulting in 116 deaths. Lebanese authorities say more than 3,000 people have been killed since hostilities escalated in March, with violence continuing despite the ceasefire. Hezbollah fighters based in Lebanon began shelling Israeli communities shortly after the Israeli-US bombing of Iran began; exchanges of fire continue today, with media reports indicating that 21 Israeli soldiers have been killed since 2 March. UN News spoke with Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN human rights office, OHCHR; Tommaso Della Longa, spokesperson for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC); and Ali Saad from the Lebanese Red Cross. Aid workers caught in the crossfire From a human rights perspective, deliberately targeting medical personnel constitutes a war crime. A ‘shocking’ sight Describing a recent visit to Lebanon, IFRC’s Mr. Della Longa recalled the jarring sight of Red Cross volunteers putting on flak jackets and helmets before heading out to save lives. “What shocked me most,” he said, “was seeing Lebanon lose people who are committed to humanity and to serving others.” Mr. Della Longa explained that the details and location of Youssef Assaf and Hassan Badawi’s mission had been shared with the warring parties. They were also travelling in ambulances clearly marked with the Red Cross insignia when they were killed. ‘They are not just numbers’ “Behind every paramedic or volunteer killed, there is a family – they are not just numbers,” he said. “Hassan had a pregnant wife and a son waiting for him at home.” For Mr. Della Longa, “hitting an ambulance and killing a humanitarian worker means weakening entire communities.” He renewed the call for the international community to respect and protect civilians, humanitarian workers, and medical transports in accordance with international law. Deconfliction failing on the ground To help protect rescue teams, the Lebanese Red Cross works with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), sharing coordinates and ensuring that all belligerents are informed of the paramedics’ whereabouts. This vital work is known as deconfliction, explained Mr. Saad, a liaison coordinator with the Lebanese Red Cross. But even with all these measures in place, rescuers have still been targeted. “This is why the Red Cross volunteers hug each other and say goodbye before every mission,” he explained. The killing of Youssef Assaf and Hassan Badawi still haunts their volunteer colleagues who have had no explanation why they were targeted. Such attacks – and the killing of Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil on 22 April – are evidence of a “double tap” trend which is increasing, insisted Mr. Saad. Killed carrying a stretcher Hassan Badawi was killed in a strike while stepping out of an ambulance with a stretcher during a rescue mission in southern Lebanon, Mr. Saad said, “a drone attacked him directly leaving 300 pieces of shrapnel in his body.” Given UNIFIL’s key deconfliction role, their impending drawdown and withdrawal from Lebanon next year is unthinkable, the Red Cross worker says: “I don’t know who will support us, but UNIFIL truly, they were international witnesses on what is going on. They might not stop the war or provide a security umbrella, but they were the only true witness to this situation.” In the meantime, the 5,000 Red Cross volunteers will continue to go on mission and risk their lives. They can access zones located in the so-called “yellow line” – a no-go zone inside southern Lebanon created by the Israeli military last month – but cannot enter battlefield zones near the border, not even to pick up dead bodies. “They are not military people, their only weapon is a bandage and helping people,” which should be good enough reason to protect them, Mr. Saad insists. -ends-

At the beginning of the war, our village was hit by an attack on the small electricity company that supplies other areas in Jabal Amel, and Ali Badawi was injured. Two days ago, Hassan Badawi (Ali's son), a Red Cross volunteer and also from my village, was targeted by Israel. This is a source of sorrow, grief, and an open wound in our south. Do you know what Hassan means? It means morals, respect, kindness, precision, skill, purity, and everything good. Yesterday was our last mission together, but I didn't think to take a picture with you, nor did I imagine it would be the last time I saw you. But it's okay; someone like you stays in our memories and hearts. There's no need for pictures. How many of the martyrs you risked your life and worked so hard to rescue are now searching for you? Hassan, the husband, father, and devoted son who left his family in Beirut and went to the South during both wars... Hassan Badawi, the engineer and paramedic, is a martyr.

A farewell befitting one who carried life in his heart until his last breath… Red Cross paramedic Hassan Badawi, a martyr of humanitarian duty, was laid to rest on the shoulders of his colleagues who shared with him the path of rescue and sacrifice. In a scene where tears mingled with pride, Badawi returned to his final resting place as a pure soul in the land of Shweifat, after dedicating his life to saving others without hesitation.

Statement of Condemnation “And say, ‘The truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Last night, Sunday, the Israeli occupation army committed another war crime by targeting a Lebanese Red Cross team, resulting in the death of paramedic Hassan Badawi and the injury of another on the road to the town of Beit Yahoun, in the Bint Jbeil district. Hassan, a 31-year-old engineer, had been a Red Cross volunteer since 2012. The Red Cross mourned Hassan, condemning the attack in which an Israeli drone directly targeted the ambulance team. The organization emphasized that "the ambulances and their crews were clearly marked with the protective Red Cross emblem from all directions, and the emblem was illuminated." The Red Cross also confirmed that its teams carry out their duties in coordination with UNIFIL forces "to ensure safe passage, while also informing the International Committee of the Red Cross." It is worth noting that the Israeli occupation army has killed 87 members of medical and ambulance teams since the start of the aggression against Lebanon on March 2nd, according to daily reports issued by the Ministry of Health.

ارتكب جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، مساء أمس الأحد، جريمة حرب جديدة باستهداف فريق تابع للصليب الأحمر اللبناني، ما أدى إلى استشهاد المسعف حسن بدوي وإصابة آخر على طريق بلدة بيت ياحون، في قضاء بنت جبيل. والشهيد حسن مهندس يبلغ من العمر 31 عاماً، ومتطوّع في الصليب الأحمر منذ عام 2012. ونعى الصليب الأحمر حسن، مندّداً بالجريمة التي استهدفت خلالها مسيّرة إسرائيلية فريق الإسعاف بشكل مباشر، مؤكداً أنّ «سيارات الإسعاف وطواقمها كانت تحمل شارات الصليب الأحمر الحامية من جميع الجهات المرئية بشكل واضح، مع إنارة الشارة». كما أكدت المنظمة أنّ طواقمها تنفّذ مهامها بالتنسيق مع قوات اليونيفيل، «من أجل تأمين المسار الآمن، مع إبلاغ اللجنة الدولية للصليب الأحمر». يُذكر أنّ جيش الاحتلال الإسرائيلي قتل 87 عنصراً من الطواقم الصحية والإسعافية منذ بدء العدوان على لبنان في 2 آذار الماضي، بحسب التقارير اليومية الصادرة عن وزارة الصحة.

He walked... shortening the distance... bathed in his pure blood... And entered Paradise through its most beautiful gates, a martyr on the path of humanity... The Lebanese Red Cross paramedic, Engineer Hassan Badawi, a martyr. May God have mercy on his soul, and grant his family and loved ones patience and solace.

What breaks the heart is that, just a week before his martyrdom, Hassan Badawi contacted one of his colleagues in Brest, France, seeking to retrieve his master's degree, despite having received it eight years prior. It was as if fate was orchestrating his final act; it was no coincidence that the university issued the degree last Friday, only for Hassan to be martyred the following Sunday. He received two degrees simultaneously: the degree of knowledge and the degree of blood. Hassan left us with a profound lesson: that attaining the highest ranks and fulfilling one's human duty is not limited to paperwork and academic degrees, but is embodied in one's stance, steadfastness, and dedication to serving people and society until one's last breath. Congratulations, Hassan, on the highest honor of martyrdom. Congratulations on your eternal victory.

Thousands of civilians have been killed across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a surprise attack against Iran on Feb. 28. An exact number has been difficult to ascertain due to restricted access to affected areas, but figures compiled from government statements, health ministries, and human rights reports indicated that at least 2,100 civilians have died as a result of the war—the vast majority by U.S.-Israeli airstrikes. In Iran, the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) has documented 1,701 civilian deaths, as part of a broader total of more than 3,400 people killed since the start of the conflict.Across Lebanon, the Lebanese health ministry said that the death toll from Israeli strikes has risen to 2,496 people since March 2. It did not provide a complete breakdown between civilians and Hezbollah fighters, but said that nearly a quarter of those killed were women, children and medics, underscoring the heavy civilian toll from the fighting.Among the totals across the region are at least 503 women: 251 in Iran, 248 in Lebanon, and four in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, who died from Iranian missile fire, according to rights groups and health authorities.At least 413 children have been killed in the Iran war, including 248 in Iran and 165 in Lebanon, with no confirmed child fatalities reported in other affected countries.Nine journalists have also been killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon since fighting escalated in early March. Medical workers and aid groups have described overwhelmed hospitals in Beirut and other cities, where mass casualty surges have strained emergency rooms and depleted medical supplies during repeated waves of airstrikes. Iranian missile and drone fire has also killed dozens of civilians across the region. Some 23 people were killed in Israel by Iran and Hezbollah strikes, according to Israel's ambulance service. At least 10 have been killed in the United Arab Emirates, among them several migrant workers. Numerous deaths due to Iranian fire have been reported across other Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain. The father of two later died from his wounds.He was one of 91 health workers killed since the start of Israel's deadly bombardment and invasion of Lebanon.“Hassan carried out his humanitarian duty,” his father, Ali Badawi, told Al Jazeera. “In every war, he used to be among the first to go, but at a cost,” his mother, Ahlam Badawi, added. “This time, God took him from me.”Al Jazeera reported that Badawi called his wife on the eve of his death, telling her that bombing was “everywhere,” but that he could not leave the wounded behind.When asked about Badawi’s death, the Israeli military told reporters that it had targeted “a Hezbollah terrorist who operated adjacent to IDF soldiers in the Bint Jbeil area in southern Lebanon. Reports were received regarding a Red Cross team injured in the strike.”Raha Zerai, 7, a schoolgirl in Minab, IranRaha Zerai was among the 165 people killed when a suspected U.S. air strike hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh Primary School in Minab, in Iran’s Hormozgan province, in the opening barrage of the war on Feb. 28. She was found in the rubble by her father, Reza Zerai, 47, in the minutes after the attack. “She was silly, full of energy, always laughing, singing, making up little poems,” Bastami, Raha’s aunt, told Foreign Policy. “Together we were always up to mischief. She loved school, and especially her teacher, and she kept telling us she wanted to study to become a dentist.”She had thick curly hair and a contagious laugh, according to relatives interviewed by Foreign Policy. Her room was decorated with Hello Kitty wallpaper and she carried a unicorn-patterned backpack.Several young gymnasts were also among the dead, according to Iran’s Gymnastics Federation and state media, including Reza Habashi, 7, Arina Arab-Kish, Atena Ahmadzadeh, Makan Nasiri, and Araz Ahmadi-Zadeh. According to Human Rights Watch, the school was on the interior border of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Naval Forces compound, but the school is walled off and in a separate compound.Shiva Amelirad, the international representative of the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, told TIME that the school was announced as closed when the war began, “but the time between the announcement of the school’s closure and the moment of the explosion was very short, and many families had not yet arrived to pick up their children.”“The principals and teachers stayed to get the children out. Most of them were killed,” Amelirad said. Saleh Ahmed, 55, a migrant worker in the UAEJust one month into the war, Human Rights Watch warned that migrant workers in Gulf countries face “additional risks” to their lives because of the conflict. Drivers, delivery workers, security guards, chefs, and cleaners have been required to continue working despite not being able to afford basic necessities and amid heightened risks.The majority of civilian deaths across the Gulf during the war have been migrant workers. Among them is Saleh Ahmed, a Bangladeshi national, who was killed in Ajman, UAE, on the first day of war by debris that fell from an intercepted Iranian missile, according to the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry. He was delivering water when he was struck. Ahmed was the sole breadwinner of his household and a hardworking man, his son Abdul Haque told Sky News in early March, just days after his father’s death. He had been living in the UAE for 25 years, sending his earnings home to his wife and four children in Bangladesh every week.“At the beginning, my father really struggled and did a lot of different work…he washed cars, cut grass, he did everything,” he said. “And for the last seven or eight years, he had a good position at the water company. He did a good job; it was in the service of people, delivering drinking water to people.”Ghada Dayekh, 59, a journalist in Tyre, LebanonRadio journalist Ghada Dayekh was killed on April 8 by an Israeli airstrike that hit her apartment building in Tyre, a city in southern Lebanon, completely destroying it. Dayekh worked for the privately owned radio station Sawt al-Farah since it began in the 1980s, the station said in a tribute to her, and she had been on air for 37 years. She hosted a morning show that discussed current events, sports and culture happening in Tyre, where she lived. She had been working from home since the radio station’s headquarters had been destroyed at the beginning of the conflict. Alwan Charafeddine, owner and director of the station, said she was “full of life and loved to joke,” according to local news outlet L’Orient Le Jour.  At least nine journalists have been killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon since fighting escalated in early March. On April 22, Amal Khalil, a reporter with the daily Al-Akhbar newspaper, was killed in an Israeli airstrike after being targeted numerous times over several hours, and despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said that a drone strike initially hit a car she was traveling behind with a colleague, forcing them to take cover in a nearby building. Rescue workers tried to reach her for several hours but were fired upon by Israeli forces, the ministry said.  Zeinab Faraj, a photographer who was accompanying Khalil and barely survived the strikes, told the UAE-based The National newspaper that they were stuck for hours in the building, whole severely injured from the first strike: “I saw Amal like that, burning, telling me, 'Zeinab, I’m burning,'" Ms Faraj said. “She told me: ‘Don’t fall asleep, don’t leave me’”. A separate airstrike then hit the building in al-Tiri where she was taking shelter, and her body was found hours later beneath the rubble.Israel denied that it prevented rescue workers from reaching the scene, or that it deliberately targeted civilians, and said the incident was under review. But Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun said after Khalil’s death that Israel “aimed at concealing the truth of its aggressive acts against Lebanon.”Three of the journalists were killed on March 28 when an Israeli airstrike hit a clearly marked press vehicle traveling near the southern town of Jezzine, according to witnesses and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).Those killed included Ali Shoaib, a correspondent for Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar TV, Fatima Ftouni of Al-Mayadeen TV, and her brother Mohamad Ftouni, a freelance photojournalist. The Israeli military acknowledged carrying out the strike that killed the journalists, claiming that Shoaib and "Mohammad Fatouni" [sic] were members of Hezbollah’s military wing.  "For many years, Shaib [sic] operated to aid Hezbollah in various ways while working as a journalist, and in 2020, he officially joined Hezbollah’s military wing," an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson told TIME. "The IDF takes all operationally feasible measures to mitigate harm to civilians, including journalists. Avigail was smart and thoughtful, she told the AP, and Sarah was “always helping around the house.”  Yitzhak Biton, the children’s father, said he hopes to open a Jewish seminary in their honor. “They sanctified God’s name with their life, and also after their death, they continue sanctifying his name,” he told the AP.
