وأقر الجيش الإسرائيلي بقتل مدنيين فلسطينيين خلال القتال، لكنه ألقى باللائمة في ذلك على حماس لقيامها باحتجاز الرهائن والقتال في بيئة مدنية مكتظة، وقال المتحدث باسم الجيش الإسرائيلي الأميرال دانيئل هغاري “نحن نعلم عن أقل من 100 قتيل [فلسطيني]. لا أعرف كم عدد الإرهابيين بينهم”.
