Nuseirat Massacre: 274 Martyrs, Including 64 Children and 57 Women
Sunday, June 9, 2024, 11:29 AM
Gaza – Palestinian Information Center
The death toll from the massacre perpetrated by the Israeli occupation forces in the Nuseirat refugee camp has risen to 274 martyrs and nearly 700 wounded, according to the Government Media Office.
The Government Media Office in Gaza stated that among the martyrs were 64 children and 57 women, noting that the occupation army used two civilian vehicles in carrying out the Nuseirat massacre.
The number of wounded reached 698, including 153 children, 161 women, and 54 elderly people. The remaining casualties were civilians who were present in and around the Nuseirat market and in nearby homes.
He confirmed that the occupation soldiers who participated in the Nuseirat massacre disguised themselves as displaced persons, and that the occupation forces bombed 89 homes and residential buildings inhabited by residents during the massacre.
The media office explained that the Israeli occupation army used two civilian vehicles in the Nuseirat massacre: a small civilian car and a pickup truck carrying belongings, mattresses, and aid supplies. This was clearly evident in videos circulated by the media. Furthermore, the soldiers involved in the massacre disguised themselves as displaced persons and wore civilian clothing, as part of a plan to commit a horrific massacre against civilians, including children and women.
He pointed out that this tactic had been repeated previously when the occupation forces committed a massacre months earlier in the New Camp area north of Nuseirat camp. At that time, the occupation army stormed the New Camp in civilian clothing, using ambulances bearing medical and health markings. This criminal method blatantly violates all international laws that prohibit such tactics. The occupation army killed more than 14 martyrs in that earlier massacre in the New Camp.
Earlier, Palestinian human rights organizations stated that Israeli occupation forces launched a large-scale ground and air attack on the Nuseirat refugee camp and the central Gaza Strip. The 75-minute assault involved the massive use of lethal firepower in a densely populated area, with no regard for civilian casualties, during what they termed a "military operation" to rescue four Israeli captives.
According to the statement, an Israeli special forces unit infiltrated the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip using two civilian vehicles, one a Cadillac and the other a large truck. These forces raided two houses in Block 5 of the camp. Shortly afterward, the occupation forces launched a ground assault with a large number of tanks into the camp from three axes: the Abu Assi station to the southeast, the Wadi Bridge area to the northeast, and the Mughraqa area and the New Camp to the north.
The statement added that simultaneously, Israeli warplanes directly bombed five houses in the camp, while also launching intense airstrikes and shelling in Block 5, the Hasayna area, and the New Camp.
The infiltration by the occupation forces and the intense bombardment coincided with rush hour in the Nuseirat refugee camp market, where thousands were shopping on the first day of the week. It's worth noting that Nuseirat, in addition to its residents, has become a refuge for tens of thousands of displaced people from the eastern part of the central Gaza Strip and from Rafah.
The occupation's air force also launched several airstrikes and bombed several homes in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, coinciding with the events in Nuseirat.
The organizations stated that ambulance and rescue teams faced extreme difficulties in transporting the victims, many of whom were dismembered, and some of whom were decapitated as a result of the bombing.
They added that their teams are still working to document all the grave violations committed by the occupation forces during their ground offensive, including the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the large number of victims, the number of children and women among them, and the homes that were destroyed with their inhabitants inside. According to initial information, the vast majority of the victims were civilians, killed under the rubble of their homes, in the streets, or while trying to flee after being discovered by the Israeli forces.
The organizations – the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and Al Haq Foundation – affirmed that this operation exemplifies the occupying forces' violation of the principles of proportionality and necessity, and is a blatant expression of their disregard for the lives of thousands of Palestinian civilians. This is in line with their ongoing policy of targeting civilians and turning them into legitimate targets for revenge and political pressure, constituting a crime of genocide.
They warned Israel's partners in this crime of genocide, whether through their unlimited military and political support for the occupying power or their silence, and demanded that they fulfill their legal obligations before it is too late. They called upon them to take practical steps to protect Palestinian civilians, halt the mass killings, and prevent the completion of this ongoing genocide, which has now entered its ninth month.
