Erbil: Couple Killed in Drone Attack
April 7, 2026
Baghdad – Al-Quds Al-Arabi: The Counter-Terrorism Directorate in Iraqi Kurdistan announced on Tuesday the killing of a man and his wife in a drone attack that targeted their home on the outskirts of Erbil, the region's capital. The directorate stated that the explosive-laden drone was launched from Iran, amid political calls for the federal government to curb attacks carried out by Iran and its proxies in the Kurdistan Region.
According to a press statement from the directorate, "The attack occurred after midnight on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, when an explosive-laden drone, launched from Iran, struck the home of a citizen in a village within the Erbil Governorate."
The statement added that "the attack resulted in the deaths of the couple, Musa Anwar Rasul and Muzhda Asaad Hassan," describing the incident as "a violation of international law and a war crime." According to the Peshmerga Ministry, the husband killed in the incident was one of its members. The ministry confirmed that the attack coincided with an attack on one of its bases within the Raparin administration by two explosive-laden drones.
The Peshmerga Ministry in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq stated in a press release that "in the dead of night, April 6, 2026, rogue and lawless terrorist groups targeted one of the Peshmerga bases within the Raparin administration using two explosive-laden drones."
It added that "on the same night, the hand of treachery reached out to target the home of Peshmerga member Musa Anwar in the Erbil area, using three explosive-laden drones launched from Iranian territory, resulting in his and his wife's martyrdom."
The ministry emphasized that "these attacks represent a dangerous continuation of the systematic series of sabotage attacks targeting Peshmerga bases and populated areas in the Kurdistan Region," noting that "the blood of the victims will not be shed in vain." The Ministry held the Islamic Republic of Iran and the outlawed armed groups in Iraq fully and directly responsible for the bombing operations.
The Ministry also placed the responsibility on the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, stressing the need for urgent measures to put a definitive end to these attacks and aggressions.
Meanwhile, Peshmerga Minister Shorsh Ismail considered the killing of the couple a transgression of all legal and humanitarian boundaries and a violation of the sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
In a press statement, he said, "We strongly condemn the terrorist attack that occurred last night with a booby-trapped drone targeting the village of Zargazoi in Erbil Governorate," expressing his sorrow for the "brutal attack that resulted in the martyrdom of one of our Peshmerga heroes, Musa Anwar Rasul, and his wife."
The Region Holds Iran and its Factions Responsible
He added that "targeting civilians, transgressing all legal and humanitarian boundaries, and violating the sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq constitutes a direct threat to the security of the region." He emphasized that “the lives of our citizens and the sovereignty of our land are a red line,” while simultaneously calling on the federal government and the international community to “take practical action and not remain silent regarding these crimes.”
In closing his statement, he declared, “On behalf of the Ministry of Peshmerga and the Peshmerga forces of Kurdistan, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs. May our righteous martyrs rest in eternal peace.”
In a related development, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, condemned the killing of a Peshmerga fighter and his wife by a drone strike as a “heinous crime.”
In a press statement, he said, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the drone attack on the home of a Peshmerga fighter in Erbil, which resulted in his martyrdom and that of his wife.”
He added, “Targeting civilians and their property is a war crime, and we are conveying the demands of the innocent Kurdish people to the entire world to put an end to the persecution they are suffering and to stop attacking the Kurdish people under baseless pretexts.”
He strongly condemned “the drone attack on the Peshmerga’s home. It is a heinous crime.” The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, also condemned the attack in a statement.
He declared that "these attacks are unacceptable and categorically rejected."
He called on the Iraqi government to "fulfill its duty and responsibility to prevent the recurrence of these crimes and terrorist attacks, and to prevent the recurrence of terrorist attacks against civilians in the Kurdistan Region."
The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, affirmed that the will of the Kurdish people is stronger than these attacks and aggressions.
He added in a statement that "the Kurdistan Region has once again been subjected to an unjustified attack," describing the incident as "the ultimate act of criminality and injustice."
He continued, "Targeting innocent Kurdish citizens in this manner and without any justification is the result of blind hatred," emphasizing that "the martyrdom of these two innocent citizens has filled all our hearts with pain and sorrow."
Barzani offered his condolences to the families and relatives of the two martyrs, adding that "targeting civilians in the Kurdistan Region is neither honorable nor a source of pride." He affirmed that "the will of the people of Kurdistan is stronger than all attacks, aggressions, and drones, and will never be broken," noting that "the people of Kurdistan rely on God and are confident in the justice of their cause."
This comes as an armed group calling itself the "Army of Wrath," which identifies itself as part of the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq," claimed responsibility for a drone attack targeting the Kurdistan Region.
In a statement, the armed group said it launched a drone attack on "American and Israeli interests" in the Kurdistan Region, without specifying the targeted locations.
It explained that the attack was carried out "in revenge" for the blood of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei, the former Secretary-General of Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, and fighters of the Iraqi army and the Popular Mobilization Forces.
