The effects of the Nuseirat camp massacre, which claimed the lives of 210 martyrs and left hundreds wounded, are still evident throughout the camp. Every neighborhood and alleyway was affected by the attack.
As the sun rose on the second day after the massacre, residents of the camp began visiting the families of the martyrs, who were buried hastily yesterday afternoon due to Israeli shelling. The occupation forces continued to bombard many areas in the central Gaza Strip, despite the conclusion of the swift ground operation.
The families of the martyrs were unable to hold full mourning gatherings, and instead received condolences in front of their homes, their hearts breaking with grief for their loved ones, taken forever by the missiles and bullets of the occupation army. Among them were children who hadn't even finished their meals, and adults who perished while preparing food, scenes captured on the phones of the families.
Among the grieving families in the camp was the Shalt family, who lost 30 members in an Israeli airstrike on one of their homes. They were pulled from the rubble. Mohammed, who lost so many of his cousins, said, "I never imagined this would happen to us." He added, "In an instant, everything was over, and they were martyred." This young man had a close bond with his cousins, who were close to him in age.
As for Abu Karim Mazhar, who lost his eldest son, he sat receiving condolences, tears of sorrow streaming down his face as he recalled the last moments he had spent with his child before the massacre. His 12-year-old son was playing in a street near their home with some friends when Israeli warplanes targeted a nearby house, killing more than 20 people, including children and elderly men.
He says he couldn't believe the news of his son's death when neighbors informed him. His friends stayed with him until nightfall on the first day to comfort him and ease his grief, but he emphasizes that the first night without his son was utterly dark.
In the Nuseirat cemetery, which is completely full of the dead, as it has no more room like other cemeteries in Gaza, those in charge were forced to dig a mass grave and bury the martyrs' bodies there.
In that mass grave, the bodies of the Shalt family were laid to rest, and young children were buried alongside their adult relatives. The cemetery grounds were filled with mourners who came with the bodies.
Among the most heart-wrenching images of the martyrs were that of a child who arrived at the hospital already dead, and another with a morsel of food in his mouth before he could swallow it. He and his brothers were at the dinner table when the bombing occurred. Among the most poignant images was that of Khalil al-Habash, who was killed by Israeli fire near the cooking stove. Their photos circulated widely on social media, accompanied by numerous comments from citizens. One such comment, written by Muhammad Ismail, read: “He hadn’t even had his last bite yet.”
Another heartbreaking scene after the massacre was that of a wounded young man whose lifeless child dangled from his arms. The man cradled his child’s face, embracing him and weeping bitterly. Another poignant image was of a woman recounting what had happened to her family. She said she had gathered her son’s mangled body, torn apart by the airstrike, while her other son, her husband, and herself were all wounded.
Dr. Alaa Al-Qatrawi wrote on her Facebook page, describing the scene: “They burned the sky above us and the earth beneath us. Smoke filled every particle of air around me. My brother’s voice pierced the thick dust, shouting at me to hurry and leave. I went to get my small bag containing my ID, because I didn’t want my name to be lost or for me to become an unknown in this mass death. I love my name, I love my short life story that resembles me so much, and I love my poems, my prayers, and my soul that loves God and heaven so much… My brother kept shouting at me to hurry, but I felt a surge of strength and shouted that I wouldn’t leave the house in my prayer clothes. I wanted to wear my abaya that I love, and if I’m going to die, I’d rather die at home than in the street.” She added, “I went down the stairs, hearing the missiles devouring our lives with a deafening roar. When I reached the door, I saw people running in every direction, and before I could ask in despair, ‘Where are we going?’ I said, ‘I’m tired, God.’”
Dr. Abdul Rabbo Al-Anzi commented on the massacre, saying: “One of the most agonizing and heart-wrenching moments for a human being is when you are surrounded by fire on land, sea, and air… as if all three sides have sworn to annihilate you. You forget your own impending death and frantically rush to embrace your children, the dearest to your heart, to flee with them to a fourth direction, the path and way of which you do not know. In the beating of your heart, you shield their trembling fears to save them. When you escape with them from the inferno, you breathe again in the face of the death you left behind in the shadows. Then you reach out to embrace their faces and touch their breaths with your palms to make sure they are still with you.”
The camp residents describe what happened yesterday as akin to “Judgment Day,” with the sounds of shelling, gunfire, and destruction heard everywhere, a scene unprecedented since the beginning of the war. The children of the camp are still haunted by fear and talk amongst themselves about what happened on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, the grieving residents began to clear away the dust of battle and bombardment. Those whose homes were severely damaged started removing piles of rubble, making their houses almost habitable, while those whose homes were completely destroyed worked to retrieve some of their belongings from under the debris.
In the camp's market, which was usually bustling with residents and displaced people, activity slowed down on the second day after the massacre, and even came to a standstill in some nearby streets, which were covered with the rubble from the bombing and airstrikes.
Hussam, one of the stall owners in the market, said that the number of shoppers was less than 10% of the usual daily number. He added that he, as a vendor, and the residents fear another military operation by the occupation army.
Speaking to Al-Quds Al-Arabi, he indicated that he and several other stall owners miraculously escaped death, as artillery shells and bullets fired from quadcopter drones rained down around them. Source
